[Chess Strategy] Softcover. Good binding and cover. Light wear. Edge slightly rubbed. Clean, unmarked pages. xvi, 174 pages : illustrations ; 23 cm. Few things more delight the chess enthusiast than the thrill of "miniatures," sparkling games of twenty-five or fewer moves, where sacrifices, combinations and quick finishes abound. Unlike ponderous, strategic games that develop through the lengthy exploitation of small technical advantages, miniatures showcase tactical brilliance and flair. In the miniature, victory -- and defeat -- are sudden. Selected and annotated by celebrated British chess authority P.H. Clarke, these hundred games, played by relatively unknown Soviet chess masters, were taken originally from the records of the Soviet Chess Bulletin and published in the British Chess Magazine. They are grouped thematically to illustrate particular lessons, but all are exemplars of energetic, exciting play.
