Synopsis:

One hundred ways to spend an evening with a single pack of cards, from Klondike and Canfield to Miss Milligan and Salic Law, each set out with its own layout and its own rules.

100 Games of Solitaire does exactly what its title promises. Helen Leslie Coops, born in 1901, was an American educator who had already written on organised recreation; here she describes each game plainly – the deal, the object, the rules that govern it – and gives a diagram showing where every card belongs.

Some of these will be familiar to anyone who has ever clicked through a hand on a screen. Others – Nivernaise, Idle Year, Auld Lang Syne, Baker's Dozen – have slipped almost entirely out of circulation, and are worth reviving. Between them they turn a quiet hour and a single deck into a hundred different problems.

This edition features:

  • One hundred solitaire games, from the widely known to the very nearly forgotten
  • A clear diagram for every game, showing how the cards are dealt and where they belong
  • Rules given step by step, with the object of each game stated before you begin
