Print on Demand. This book is a thorough exploration of the historical evolution of the scientific understanding of fungi and the question of whether they exhibit a variability in appearance and characteristics called polymorphism. Beginning with the earliest philosophers who believed mushrooms arose from spontaneous generation to the modern theories and observations made possible by the microscope, the author traces the history of scientific engagement with this subject. The impact of the theories of Lamarck and Darwin are discussed as well as the work of influential scientists, both supporters, and detractors, of the theory of fungal polymorphism. The author also details the various ways that fungi reproduce and how environmental factors influence their growth and appearance before summarizing the current consensus in the scientific community on polymorphism. This work will be of interest to mycologists, historians of science, and anyone interested in the fascinating world of fungi and the ongoing pursuit of understanding their complex biology. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.…

C'est surtout a l'époque contemporaine que la question du polymorphisme des champignons se pose véritablement. Ses progrès marchent de pair avec ceux du microscope et de la méthode. On distingue plusieurs écoles durant cette période.
