Bibliographic Details

Title: De Iure Belli ac Pacis Libri Tres, in quibus...

Publisher: Apud Ioannem Blaeu, Amsterdam

Publication Date: 1660

Binding: Full Leather

Book Condition: Very Good

Pp. 12 p.l., 618, [46]. Title in red and black, woodcut printer's device. Contemporary calf, double blind ruled border with small cornerpieces, double blind ruled compartments between raised bands, gilt thistle stamp in one one compartment, shelf numbers in another, diagonal rules at head and foot of spine. Binding a little rubbed at extremities, two ink signatures on ffep, leaves a little browned, faded ink annotations on early leaves, lacking rear pastedown, but overall a nice copy. First published in 1625, while Grotius was living in Paris (after his ingenious escape from Holland in a box full of books), De Jure Belli et Pacis (On the Law of War and Peace) made its author famous throughout Europe, and ultimately came to be regarded as the cornerstone of modern political philosophy and jurisprudence. His treatise was the first to attempt to establish the principles of "natural law" and the social contract as the basis of society and government, rather than revelations of religion or the edicts of emperors; and as such, it anticipated the ideas of the great political theorists of the 18th century, and laid the foundations of modern international law. PMM 125 (1625 edition). Size: Octavo. Bookseller Inventory # 21544
