About this Item
Wrappers. Covers very slightly faded at spine. Inscribed by the author to Philip Oakes, "Philip with best wishes Gavin May 1971". "When I am old and long turned grey / And enjoy the aura of being eighty, / I may see the dawn of that critical day / When my lightest verse will seem quite weighty" (opening of "2001 (The Tennyson/Hardy Poem)"). Gavin Ewart (1916-1995) died 83 days short of 80; Philip Oakes (1928-2005) missed the aura by over two years. Ewart, wrote Anthony Thwaite in The Independent's obituary, was "one of the oddest poetic phenemona of our time". Seller Inventory # T100191
