About this Item
Covers damp-stained, dustwrapper slightly frayed at spine. Inscribed by the author on the dedication page, "For Derek Stanford & Muriel Spark in admiration for their anthology 'Tribute to Wordsworth' June 17th/50"; signed by him on the title-page, with his address below, and with his autograph corrections on pp.[6], [7], 23, 36 and 44. Herbert Palmer, some of whose early books were published by the Hogarth Press, was one of the poets who resigned from the Poetry Society when Spark was sacked as its General Secretary in 1948, and he contributed to the new magazine, Forum, that Spark and Stanford produced in 1949. "He was nearly seventy when I met him for the first time," remembered Stanford. "The best description of Palmer that I know is that of the ancient Percy Mannering in Muriel's [1959] novel Memento Mori . . . Percy, of course, is a caricature figure; even so, it gives a good idea of Palmer's gleeful, wolfish but generous nature . . . He was old, he was poor, he was terribly proud. He looked like a kind of scarecrow hidalgo, his white hair suggesting a patch of thistleheads in seed.' Stanford refers specifically and positively to The Dragon of Tingalam in his 1951 book Christopher Fry: an appreciation. Seller Inventory # 29M100607
