Sir Walter Besant's "History of London" was first published during ther early 1900s. Ten volumes each covered a different historical period and gave an insight into daily life. Sir Walter, inspired by the example of Stowe some 300 years earlier, set out to write a new survey of London. He had the gift of making history a pleasure to read for the layman and at the same time detailed enough for the student. This edition of his work is reproduced in facsimile form in order to preserve the character of Edwardian production and can be enjoyed not only for its content but also the style. The first book in the new edition is on the Tudors, one of the greatest periods in England's and London's history.
