Book
Soft cover. Condition: Fine. A new looking book that is clean tight with unmarked pages. 204pp. 'The Village London Atlas' is designed to show, area by area, the growth of Greater London during the Victorian era, using the Ordnance Survey maps of 1822, 1860 and 1902 ranged in a series of sets of three double-page spreads, 96 in all. At an approximate scale of two inches to the mile each spread covers an area of 40 square miles. The accompanying text outlines the way London developed over the century including quotes from Victorian authors who were even then writing and complaining about the way that London was being demolished, developed and built over in much the same way as we are today. In 1822 London barely reached to Regents Part in the north and Southwark in the south. Within the next 80 years all the dozens of villages and small market towns, now known as Greater London, had joined together along the main turnpike routes and railways out of the City to form the vast metropolis we know today. 'Village London Atlas' will appeal to all readers who have a general interest in London's history and topography, and will also be a unique source of reference for academics.
