About this Item
Spine slightly darkened, covers very slightly marked, some mild spotting of prelims. On the front endpapers the pencilled notes of the historian Hugh Cecil; in the text his few marginal pencillings. A wartime school story. "'The point is, sir, that I've decided that I'll have nothing to do with the killing - so long as I am perfectly safe and comfortable myself. I'll do anything else - help in the hospital making swabs and things - but while I'm safe here I will not help to kill men and boys I know nothing about.' 'Know nothing about! The boy's mad. Haven't you learnt enough in the last two years to know that every German is a savage at heart?' 'I don't believe it.' 'At least you can understand that if you refuse to help your own people you are helping the enemy?' 'I don't refuse to help our own people,' Aubrey persisted. 'I'll do anything else - but I won't kill.' 'This is sheer treason!' exclaimed the horrified major. 'I shall report the matter to the head master and see what he has to say about it.'" Guy Noel Pocock (1880-1955) taught at Cheltenham College, 1905-14, and at the Royal Naval College, Dartmouth, 1914-23. From 1934 to 1940 he was Head of General Talks and the Adult Education Department at the BBC. Seller Inventory # GW100096
