About this Item
Wrappers. Inserted a presentation autograph letter signed from the publisher, Erica Marx, 1p. 4to, Hand and Flower Press, 10 November 1953. "The enclosed book," writes Marx (to "Dear Sir"), "may have some regional interest for you. Joseph Chiari, a Frenchman, was de Gaulle's Consul in Edinburgh during the war." Chiari (1911-1989), a Corsican, arrived in Scotland in 1938; he founded the French Institute in Scotland after the Second World War and had a part in the launch of the Edinburgh Festival. His first book of poems was White Temple by the Sea (1949); Hugh MacDiarmid contributed a preface to his Collected Poems (Enitharmon Press, 1978). Chiari published a memoir of T.S. Eliot, a close friend, in 1982. Marx, an American who moved initially to Paris, ran the Hand and Flower Press in Kent from 1940 until 1963. Seller Inventory # T100137
