About this Item
Contemporary maroon morocco, gilt, by Mansell, all edges gilt, marbled endpapers. Spine slightly faded, corners slightly rubbed. With the ownership signatures of C. Moody, 1888, Lilian Metcalfe, 1896, Noel Haulhan &c. "Several years ago . . . I used to see a party of three young people, strangers at Abetone, working in the woods, and they attracted my attention, because one of them was a girl who shared in all the boys' work . . . The neighbours call her 'La Bruciata,' and she bears the mark of some frightful accident. One of her hands has been so injured by the fire as to have hardly the shape of a hand at all, so that she has been cut off from every kind of 'woman's work;' she cannot sew, nor knit, nor spin; nobody would take her for a servant, nobody will ever marry her. . . . [Yet] her strange rough life has neither injured her, nor made her unhappy . . . People call her 'piuttosto bellina' . . .". Seller Inventory # 28M100008
