Hardcover. Condition: As New. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. Photographs (illustrator). 1st American Edition. The question film writers usually ask is, 'How did such and such a film star become the star she did?' The Celluloid Sacrifice is a book that prefers to ask, 'Whyâ ¦â It is an attempt to apply psychology, biography, film history and film criticism to the problem of the personalities of some significant starsâ "Dietrich, Mac West, Garbo, Elizabeth Taylor among them - and to see why each achieved her success. But the scope of the book is wider. The author has taken his theme from a remark by Jean Cocteau " 'The cinema, that temple of sex with its goddesses. its guardians and its victims." And he examines especially (he sexual appeal of the star personality. the peculiar contemporary problems facing the film censors in Britain and America, and, in the last section the ascendancy of the female star, and her male 'victim'. Parts of the book are likely to be highly controversial: the censorship section, for example, considers the British censor in his role as a creator of taste in addition to a guardian of morals, and the recent controversy over screen morals in America is gone Into in depth in a criticism of the way that pressure groups have stunted the American cinema's sexual maturity. Mr Walker, who is film critic for the London Evening Standard, has drawn evidence from many films, some recent and some still existing only through the efforts of private collectors. All orders shipped protected in a box. Inside of dust jacket has tape repairs. Some bumping to top and bottom of spine. Book.
