Wraps. Condition: Very good. Later printing. viii, 159, [1] pages. Illustrations. Maps. Glossary. Index. John A. Cash, a retired Army colonel, served in combat and intelligence assignments and as a historian. Colonel Cash retired in 1992 from the U.S. Center for Military History. He wrote two books, "Seven Firefights in Vietnam" and "The Exclusion of Black Soldiers from the Medal of Honor in World War II," and contributed to a third, "Black Soldier-White Army: The 24th Infantry Regiment in Korea." He was a graduate of Rutgers University, where he also received a master's degree in history. He received a second master's, in Latin American studies, at the University of Wisconsin at Madison. In the early 1960s, Colonel Lee helped train Cuban nationals for the abortive Bay of Pigs invasion of Cuba. He served as a company commander in Vietnam during the war, as defense attache in El Salvador and Brazil and as an intelligence officer at the Defense Intelligence Agency. The Center of Military History is again pleased to reprint Seven Firefights in Vietnam, the first of any kind of publication under the Center's imprint to appear on this conflict. The events described in this small book are illustrative of much that took place in Vietnam after American troops were first committed in force in 1965: of heroic achievement and sacrifice, of human error, of experimentation and innovation, of a wily and elusive enemy, and of a new dimension in warfare afforded by the helicopter. These accounts serve as a preliminary record of the achievements of men who served their nation well, a preface to a full military history of the war that is in preparation. The narratives also serve as valuable lessons to soldiers pursuing lessons of small unit actions.

First Edition
First Edition. 8vo. 23.5cm x 15cm. Publisher's yellow pictorial card covers titled and decorated in red to spine and covers. Minor scuffing and edgewear, a little grubbiness to the card, strong and bright, a very good copy. 159pp. Internally clean. The first printing of a much reprinted after action analysis of seven notable firefights in Vietnam between 1965 and 1968. Primarily intended to give "a measure of vicarious experience" as Brigadier General Pattison states in his foreword, this slim volume offers eyewitness accunts, expert assessment of strategy, good and bad, and perhaps most valuably considering that when this pamphlet was issued the war would continue for another 5 years, an idea of how diverse and potentially unconventional military encounters in Vietnam could be.

Card covers, viii/159pp, b&w photos, maps. Light wear to card edges, page edges a little browned, inscribed by John Cash to former owner (on title page); a very good copy. Engagements with the elusive Vietcong and NVA were unlike the frontlines and complex battles that the United States military had been fighting for over a hundred years; they were often short, brutal affairs. The U.S. soldiers and marines were often thrust into battle outnumbered and in hostile territory, or ambushed in convoy or on patrol. Three authors, all of whom had seen action in Vietnam, set about collecting and illustrating examples of the types of fighting that occurred during the war; from the famous battle between the 7th Cavalry and the NVA in the Ia Drang valley to the countrywide Tet offensive. The examples are; Fight at Ia Drang by John A. Cash; Convoy Ambush on Highway 1 by John Albright; Ambush at Phuoc An by John A. Cash; Fight Along the Rach Ba Rai by John Albright; Three Companies at Dak To by Allan W. Sandstrum; Battle of Lang Vei by John A. Cash; Gunship Mission by John A. Cash.
