Third edition of this landmark medical textbook, presentation copy, inscribed by Nightingale to a promising Nightingale School trainee on the occasion of her transfer to Canada to provide emergency medical relief. This copy, evidently well-read by its recipient, testifies to Nightingale's close relationship with her nurses and her continual encouragement of their professional development. The warm inscription on the half-title reads, "Nurse Ellen Webb: on going out to Montreal: with Florence Nightingale's love & prayers. Go on & on! London: July, 1876". Webb's occupation and name were written in pencil first, then traced in ink; the second line is also in ink, and the remainder of the inscription in pencil. Ellen Webb was one of four Nightingale nurses sent to the Montreal General Hospital in August 1876. The lady superintendent of Montreal General Hospital was Maria Machin, a Canadian nurse who had entered the Nightingale School in 1873 and distinguished herself at teaching probationers. Montreal General Hospital requested Machin's transfer in 1875, which the Nightingale Fund Council reluctantly approved, though loathe to lose a competent teacher. Machin arrived in October of the same year, accompanied by four Nightingale nurses, and greatly improved nursing practices at the hospital. When a typhoid epidemic hit Montreal in 1876, Machin requested a second team of Nightingale nurses. Ellen Webb, Anna Marsh, Jane Masters, and Jane Cross were chosen, having just completed their first year of training in London. In a letter dated 4 May 1876, Nightingale writes of Webb: "most excellent and admirable; I believe she would go to Canada. Webb and Rodgers really the highest women on my list" (McDonald, p. 537). "Webb had a right-minded, gentle, forbearing disposition. She was not clever, but she was anxious to learn and Machin thought that with experience she would become a valuable nurse. In their second year in Montreal, when Machin was unable to give a reasonable amount of supervision and support, Cross and Webb did even better under very trying circumstances" (Helmstadter). An economic downturn in Montreal forced budget cuts at the hospital. Machin remained, but four Nightingale nurses - Cross and Webb among them - left in July 1878, only to be shipwrecked for a week on an island in the St Lawrence River. "Their safe return [to Glasgow on 9 August] was celebrated in prayers of thanksgiving and a publication of their adventure, organized by Nightingale" (McDonald, p. 530). Said publication, which comprised letters written to Nightingale from the shipwrecked nurses, was edited by her and titled From Nurse Wilson's, Nurse Styring's, Nurse Cross's, and Nurse Webb's Accounts of the Shipwreck on Their Voyage Home from Canada on Duty. Afterwards, Nightingale remarked in a private letter: "The nurses are not much the worse. They seem to have behaved admirably. Help us to thank God for them and for ourselves" (to Harry Verney, 15 Aug. 1878; McDonald, p. 545). Nightingale's gift to Webb - the third edition of The Essentials of Bandaging by Berkeley Hill - is especially apt reading for a Nightingale School nurse whose training had been interrupted. It is the best known work by Matthew Berkeley Hill (1834-1892), a member of the London medical elite and Professor of Clinical Surgery and Teacher of Practical Surgery at UCL. First published in 1867, the guide provides practical and comprehensive instructions on bandaging and strapping and the treatment of fractures and dislocations. It proved very popular and went through six editions by 1887. The second edition of 1869 adds an appendix of preparations requisite for the sick and operating rooms, plus a list of useful surgical instruments and appliances. The present third edition is revised to include the very latest improvements in treatment, such as the administering of chloroform and ether, and also incorporates new illustrations. The Essentials of Bandaging featured prominently in the training of nurses and became a classic in the field. "One of the earliest reading lists for nurses is the 1873 reading list for St. Thomas's Hospital included in the syllabus of lectures delivered by Dr John Croft, medical lecturer to the probationer nurses. The list began with an 'Introductory Address, by Miss Nightingale.' Students were expected to read Notes on Nursing 'at least four times.' The list also included two other short nursing texts, Handbook for Nurses by Z. Veitch and A Manual for Hospital Nurses by E. J. Domville, along with Berkeley Hill's Essentials of Bandaging" (Tesseyman, p. 108). In March 1873 Nightingale made a note of books "recommended by Dr Croft": the second edition of The Essentials of Bandaging is the second title given, and Nightingale records that they purchased six copies. Carol Helmstadter, "Maria Machin at the Montreal General Hospital: a study in revisionism", The UKAHN Bulletin, vol. 8, no. 1, 2020; Lynn McDonald, ed., Florence Nightingale: Extending Nursing, 2009; Sheri Tesseyman, "Complex alliance: a study of relationships between nursing and medicine in Britain and the United States of America, 1860-1914", thesis submitted to the University of Manchester, 2013. For Nightingale's manuscript notes of March 1873, see the transcription file Add Mss 47760-67, 49623, made available online by the University of Guelph. Octavo.
