Book First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. First American Edition. Stated: First American Edition. In addition contains complete number line including number one. Hard cover in very good condition with light gray boards, black spine cloth, and pink gilt spine lettering. Interior text block clean & tight; no writing, no markings noted. Overall very light mellow age toning to the papers. Dust jacket in likewise very good condition; ghost of shelf & edge wear; age toning to the white of the jacket; not price clipped. * From the jacket flap, "Published posthumously, this is the last work of fiction by the writer whom Nobel Laureate Patrick White called "a novelist of genius." A magnificent novel of betrayal and self-delusion, madness and consuming passions, "I'm Dying Laughing" spans three decades and two continents as it re-creates to chilling effect the political turbulence of the American Left and the clamor and menace of the McCarthy Right. And not since her classic "The Man Who Loved Children" has Christina Stead fashioned two such large and memorable characters as Emily Wilkes and Stephen Howard. Emily, writer of successful pop novels and film scripts, is a woman of enormous but mercurial enthusiasms and a voracious appetite for experience, whose unflagging ebullience masks a darkness that will lead to disaster. . . . Savage, tragic, and mordantly funny, "I'm Dying Laughing" is manifestly the work of one of our great writers.".
First edition. Hardcover. A bit of edge toning, otherwise fine in fine dustjacket (sterling price intact) Edited and with a Preface by R.G. Geering. A "savagely funny expose of radicalism and betrayal during the McCarthy era in America and Europe." This heavy book will cost more to send overseas, than any default postage rate noted.

Hard Cover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. A novel about life on the American left. From the cover notes: Christina Stead, one of the twentieth century's most profound and original writers, died in 1983, leaving behind her this unpublished novel, on which she had worked for many years. "I'm Dying Laughing" is a tour de force, a brilliant and savagely funny expose of radicalism and betrayal during the McCarthy era in America and Europe. The book was edited and prepared for publication by Prof Ron Geering, Christina Stead's literary executor. It is a magnificent achievement, an unsparing portrait of the disintegration of American Hollywood radicals, revealed with the passionate objectivity which was her hallmark. These books were purchased new and have been in storage for decades. However, there is minor tanning along the edges of the book. Several copies are available. 447 pages. Books listed here are not stored at the shop. Please contact us if you want to pick up a book from Newtown. Size: Size F: 9"-10" Tall (228-254mm).

Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. First U.S. Edition. Hardcover : [xii], 447p : black cloth-backed boards, pink lettering to spine : unclipped dust wrapper. Stead's last published novel appearing after her death in 1983. Set in the States, the work spans three decades from the 1930s to 1950s during the time of the McCarthy hearings and the work, not surprisingly, is the most political of her novels. Stead started the novel in the 1940s while living in America and completed it in 1966 although she was encouraged to rework it which she did over the next 10 or so years. R. G. Geering, Stead's literary executor, who also produced a number of biographical and critical studies of the author, revised the work for publication.
