[4],xliv,480pp., including frontispiece portrait. 12mo. Original dark red cloth, spine gilt, front board gilt-ruled with gilt-stamped publisher's logo center, t.e.g. Spine slightly faded and stained. Ex-library copy with torn bookplate of Dartmouth College Library, shelving label, and deaccession stamps on front pastedown. Interior is otherwise clean and unmarked. Overall very good. Lakeside Press reprint of buffalo hunter John Cook's narrative, first published in 1907, with introduction by historian Milo Quaife. This is number thirty-six in the Lakeside Classics series. Cook was born in Ohio in 1844, and fought for the Union in Kansas and Missouri during the Civil War. Cook penned this narrative somewhat later in life, partially as a defense of the buffalo hunters whose role in that animal's near-extinction had earned them public scorn. Cook also relays a story about the ultimate fate of the Bloody Benders of Kansas, who he claims were followed and killed by a group of men as they attempted to escape - a story Adams notes he has not heard in any other source. This edition does not include the twenty-two page addendum "Miscellaneous Stories of Buffalo Land" which accompanied the original. HOWES C730. ADAMS SIX-GUNS 487 (note). GRAFF 864 (ref).
