Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. xv+966 pages with tables and index. Royal octavo (9 3/4" x 7 1/4") bound in original blue cloth with gilt lettering to spine and gilt Wenner-Gren Foundation embossed gilt stamp to front. Preface by Paul Fejos. First edition. This volume, planned and directed by an international committee of leading anthropologists, is the first great stocktaking of the whole of our knowledge of man as it is embodied in the work of modern anthropology. Fifty subjects of key importance to the "science of man" are here discussed by those scholars, who, in the combined judgment of the international committee, are best qualified to summarize the state of learning upon the questions involved. The result of this careful selection of subject and author is a monumental work which will be for anthropology what the Encyclopedia of the Social Sciences was for the whole field of social science. There is no fuller summary of progress in anthropological research-no other answer by the profession itself to the question of what advances have been made in our knowledge of man and what major areas remain to be explored. Forty of the research papers deal with problems of fundamental science and ten with problems of its application. The subjects are varied. They range from the earliest human fossils, the great apes, race and genetics, and long-range dating by carbon 14 and fluorine methods, to the variety and classification of languages, problems of culture and personality, human ecology, style, national character, universal characters in civilizations and cultures and social science and the humanities. From every continent in the world the most eminent scholars have contributed their work to this sophisticated compilation. condition: Corners gently bumped. Jacket price clipped, with corners and spine ends chipped, some age toing to jacket else a very good to fine copy in a very good jacket.
