First edition of the work introducing Gloger's rule, of interest to Darwin when considering geographic variation, presentation copy to the German astronomy professor Palm Heinrich Ludwig von Boguslawski, inscribed from the author opposite the title page, "Herrn Hauptmann von Boguslawsky in freundlichster Ergebenheit der Verfasser". In Das Abändern der Vögel durch Einfluss des Klima's the German zoologist and ornithologist Constantin Wilhelm Lambert Gloger (1803-1863) presents what is now known as Gloger's rule: an eco-geographical rule which notes interspecific pigmentation variety as a result of differing climates. Taking birds as his initial example, Gloger noted that individuals of many species tended toward being darkly pigmented in humid climates and lightly coloured in dry ones. In a letter to Leonard Jenyns dated 17 October 1846, Darwin wrote of his interest in "the amount of variation in our common species. This point interests me from having lately been skimming over the absurdly opposite conclusions of Gloger & Brehm; the one making half-a dozen species out of every common bird & the other turning so many reputed species into one. Have you ever done anything of this kind; or have you ever studied Gloger's or Brehm's works?" (Darwin Correspondence Project, letter no. 1009). Darwin's annotated copy of this work is in the Darwin Library at Cambridge, in which he makes broad summative notes - "I might say, according to Gloger plumge [sic] varies a little according to climate" - and marks concepts to follow up in his own work: "many short-tailed birds have 1 or 2 pair of extra-caudal. (as Kingfisher) can this be compensation or rudimentary. (allude when I talk of important organs being few & not variable)". As Darwin's letter to Jenyns hints at, however, he ultimately found Gloger's work wanting, concluding his notes with: "Only skimmed, vry poor Book all Assertion". But he did cite Gloger in The Variation of Animals and Plants under Domestication (1868), and colleagues such as Charles Lyell continued to draw Darwin's attention to it as a useful reference work (Darwin Correspondence Project, letter no. 6275). The recipient of this copy, Palm Heinrich Ludwig von Boguslawski (1789-1851), retired as Hauptmann from the Prussian Army after serving during the French invasion of Russia (1812). From 1831 he was director of the Breslau observatory and later held an honorary professorship at the University of Breslau. It is probable that Gloger and Boguslawski met during their mutual time spent in Breslau, where this work was published. Relatively well-represented institutionally, it is notably scarce in commerce, with no recorded appearances at auction and no further copies on the market. Octavo (210 x 125 mm). Contemporary white and green paper-covered boards imitating a half vellum binding, printed spine label, dated by hand at foot. Front endpapers with several contemporary and later ownership marks, including those of Daniel Frederik Eschricht (Danish zoologist, 1798-1863); J. Reinhardt (signature dated 1863); Karl Pogge; Hans-Peter Müller. Front pastedown annotated to note this as the original binding from 1833. Rubbed, spine ends and corners bumped and worn, small loss to spine label carefully filled in by hand, tiny chip to top edge of title leaf, sporadic light foxing else clean and unmarked. A very good copy.
