Ursprünglich als Etüde konzipiert, gelang Mendelssohn durch Umarbeitung der Vorlage und Hinzufügung einer Andante-Einleitung eines seiner hervorragendsten Klavierwerke, das sich bis auf den heutigen Tag ungebrochener Beliebtheit erfreut. Neuware - Mit seinen 'Variations sérieuses' lieferte Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy einen Beitrag zu dem vom Wiener Verleger Pietro Mecchetti initiierten Sammelband Album-Beethoven, dessen Erlös der Finanzierung des Beethoven-Denkmals in Bonn zugute kommen sollte. Um dem hohen Anspruch des zu ehrenden Komponisten gerecht zu werden, entschied sich Mendelssohn für einen Variationenzyklus, der sich, wie schon der Titelzusatz sérieuses signalisiert, deutlich vom vordergründig-virtuosen Variationsstil der Zeit abhebt und damit so zentrale Werke einer späteren Generation wie etwa die Händel-Variationen von Johannes Brahms beeinflussen sollte. Die Neuausgabe der Wiener Urtext Edition basiert in erster Linie auf der Wiener Erstpublikation, deren Text am Autograph überprüft wurde. Zusätzlich konnte die Korrespondenz von Mecchettis Verlagslektor Becher mit Mendelssohn herangezogen werden; Diskrepanzen zwischen dem Autograph und dem von Mendelssohn revidierten Text des Erstdrucks konnten so verlässlich geklärt werden. Die Interpretationshinweise von Peter Roggenkamp berücksichtigen vielfältige Aspekte von der spieltechnischen Erarbeitung bis hin zum aufführungspraktischen Detail.
