Condition: new. (Hardcover, 1995). (1885) 1995 1st edition thus. 8vo (160 x 240mm). Ppiv,95. Frontispiece portrait, b/w illustrations. Quarter bound in dark blue bonded leather over lighter blue cloth, silk marker ribbon, top edge gilt, gilt FFCL logo to upper board, spine titled in gilt. First published in the Badminton Library volume on Salmon and Trout, edited by Harry Cholmondely-Pennell and published in 1885. Featuring a new Introduction by David Burnett. Apart from his legendary prowess as a caster and salmon fisher, Major Traherne is revered among expert fly-tyers as the greatest artist who ever tied a feather to a hook. Traherne was persuaded to contribute this essay to the volume on Salmon and Trout Fishing in the Badminton Library series. To honour this exceptional fisherman, described by Marston in The Fishing Gazette (1901) as ".one of the best salmon anglers and most genial of men", we have reproduced this text, including the Kelson fly section (whichhas some additional patterns by Farlow) to make a unique book. .

Condition: new. (Hardcover, 2014). (1939) 2009 new edition (2014 re-issue). 8vo (160 x 240mm). Ppxxii,210 + 1pp ad. B/w photograph plates and illustrations. Blue boards, spine titled in gilt. Fine new copy in dust-wrapper. Originally published in 1939 when William Carter Platts was 75 years old, Grayling Fishing was written partly to redress the balance, as he saw it, that despite a great interest from anglers in this fish, no books had been written on the subject for over thirty years; and partly as a result of a lifetime's affection for 'the lady of the stream.' He covers the subject in much detail, from its history, origins and habitat to tackle and bait selection and its presence in the kitchen, and not only covers grayling in this country but a chapter is dedicated to the species in America. A fascinating and comprehensive treatise on fishing for grayling by a passionate angler and writer. This edition has a new scholarly and informative Introduction by John Austin. This printing was limited to 500 copies for the Flyfisher's Classic Library, only 200 copies of which were actually bound. The remaining 300 copies have been issued in 2014 in a new dust-wrapper. .

Condition: New. (Hardcover, 1994). (1915) 1994 FFCL edition. 8vo (160 x 240mm). Ppxxii,272. Frontispiece portrait photograph, b/w illustrations. Quarter bound in tan bonded leather over grey cloth, gilt FFCL motif to upper board, spine titled in black with gilt fly motif, silk marker ribbon. Edition limited to 950 copies. Fine copy, without slipcase. ".has been described as "one of the twelve peaks of angling progress", the great sleeper among British angling literature. Gingrich (The Fishing in Print) says: "I had come to think of him as the completely unsung genius of English angling literature. I consider Some New Arts and Mysteries one of the most innovative fishing books ever written." Mottram was a radiologist. His scientific training gave him great advantages as an investigative trout angler. His fly patterns for nymphs, smuts and "silhouette" duns were years ahead of their time. These patterns date from pre-1915! In his Introduction, Mottram suggests the different types of fisherman he is addressing: "For the hunter, there is much of practice, therecord of many facts, the outcome of many experiments. Chapters on optics, mechanics, and the colour-sense of fish will, it is hoped, interest the scientific. For the fly-tier, there are hints on waterside fly-tying and a discourse on flies of the future. For the fish-breeder, waterweeds and the treatment of mud are discussed. The naturalist is told of birds and the habits of fish, and even the poacher will, it may be, find some things a little to his liking." This is an important book for the fly-fisherman and fly-tyer, as relevant today as it was eighty years ago. Few writings since have reached the same level of complete and articulate intelligence on the part of a master fisherman." New introduction by David Burnett. PREVIOUS PRICE £69.00.

Fully bound in red bonded leather, gilt FFCL motif to upper board, spine titled in gilt, silk marker ribbon, marbled end-papers, top edge gilt. Red cloth-bound slipcase. Edition limited to only 750 copies. Fine second-hand copy in slightly used slipcase. From an edition of 750. First published in 1955 as a National Book League Reader's Guide, this is a most useful reference. An eleven-page Introduction by Ransome precedes a catalogue of angling books. The entries carry lively and interesting notes; a great improvement on the earlier Reader's Guide edited by John Moore. This Flyfisher's Classic Library edition has a new Preface by Tom Fort. ".Ransome's selection represents as sound a basis for a fishing library now as it did forty years ago." (Tom Fort 1994.) "The Fisherman's Library was commissioned by the National Book League as one of a series of short historical information books by well-known writers. Here Arthur Ransome lists and describes some of his favourite volumes. From his early days, he had been a keen collector with a particular fondness for unusual early books and diaries. By the time this little book appeared in 1955 Ransome had a substantial library and reading about fishing became the solace of his old age. What better introduction to the literature of angling could there be than this? Our text adds Ransome's original note under Omissions which he may have prepared in case of a reprint." .
