Facsimile map 46cm x 72.4cm, very good condition. This facsimile map was printed for the Queensberry Press, they were originally laid down on cloth and hand coloured, and issued in a limited edition of 155 copies, this map must have been surplus to the edition it has not been laid down on cloth and the rivers and boundaries have not been coloured, still a very important map. Surveyor Major Thomas Mitchell passed through what is now known as Victoria in 1836 naming all the country south of the Murray River "Australia Felix". It was a landmark journey in Australian History as shortly after his expedition the whole region was opened up and settled by the new inhabitants of the continent. Melbourne was founded the following year. The 1847 Thomas Ham map (of which this is a facsimile) was the best map available for people to find their way around Victoria. At the time the map was mounted on canvas and folded to fit into saddle bags. Names and locations of squatters, and the location of inns was given in a separate key to the map.
