In the second part some pages on the wrong place, but complete). 16x10 cm * L Hombre, auch Lomber (von hombre, span. Mann, gemeint ist der Spieler), ist ein früher weit verbreitetes Kartenspiel für drei Personen. Im 17. und 18. Jahrhundert wurden speziell für dieses Spiel kunstvoll gestaltete dreiseitige Lombertische hergestellt. L Hombre war sehr einflussreich für die Geschichte der Kartenspiele, denn darüber wurde das Prinzip des Reizens in viele andere Kartenspiele übertragen, unter anderem in die modernen Tarock-Varianten, sowie in weiterer Folge in Skat und andere Spiele. L Hombre soll im 14. Jahrhundert in Spanien erfunden worden sein. Von dort kam es, wahrscheinlich durch Maria Teresa, die Gemahlin Ludwigs XIV., an den französischen Hof und fand dann rasch Eingang in ganz Europa. Im Laufe des 18. und 19. Jahrhunderts wurde L Hombre in Frankreich und England mehr und mehr vom Whist verdrängt, und nur in Deutschland und Dänemark behauptete es bis zum Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts seinen vornehmen Rang. L Hombre war allerdings als eher kompliziertes und schwieriges Spiel nie in weiten Kreisen verbreitet. In Spanien wird L Hombre auch Juego del tresillo (Dreispiel) genannt und mit national-spanischen Karten (ohne Achten und Neunen) gespielt, in Deutschland dagegen mit der französischen Karte nach Ausscheidung der Achten, Neunen und Zehnen, also mit 40 Blättern. The ends of the spine are chipped, the corners are worn through to the cardboard, and the boards are scuffed. Call number painted on spine. Convent stamp and pencil notation on blank front endpapers. Pages a bit age-toned and foxed, but otherwise, text unmarked and binding tight. Two parts in one volume; text is in French. Includes three plates, two of which are foldout. This copy belonged to Archbishop John B. Purcell of Cincinnati (1800-1883), whose signature is on the title page.

Half title and title printed in red to each volume, continuous pagination through the two parts. Folio. Text in parallel French and Latin. Contemporary mottled calf, spines with raised bands, gilt decorated compartments, red and brown labels, marbled end-papers, all edges gilt. Near uniform bindings but as typically with slight variant tooling to the spines of Supplement due to later publication date. Complete as listed in Brunet* with 1396 plates (on 1395 sheets) of which 242 are double page. Signs of earlier very professional refurbishment, small areas of gilding renewed, corners repaired etc. Endpapers browned, occasional leaves lightly tanned in accordance with varied paper stock, generally very clean and fresh contents in a handsome binding in excellent condition. FIRST EDITION of the ten volumes of the main body of the work (1719, Second Edition published 1722), Second Edition of the Supplement (1757) which was first issued in 1724.
