Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Detroit's Streetcar Heritage is a photographic essay of the Detroit, Michigan, streetcar system. Replacement of slow moving horsecar service began with the opening of an electric street railway by the Detroit Citizens Street Railway in 1892. By 1900, all of the Detroit streetcar systems were consolidated into the Detroit United Railway (DUR). Following voter approval, the City of Detroit purchased DUR in 1922, becoming the first large United States city to own and operate public transit under Detroit Department of Street Railways (DSR). Between 1921 and 1930, DSR purchased 781 Peter Witt type streetcars. Although DSR purchased 186 modern Presidents' Conference Committee (PCC) cars between 1945 and 1949, many streetcar lines were converted to bus operation. The last streetcar line on Woodward Avenue was converted to bus operation in 1956 with 183 PCC cars sold to Mexico City. Detroit's Streetcar Heritage documents the city's streetcar era plus scenes of the PCC cars in Mexico City, the Washington Boulevard Line which operated from 1976 to 2003, and the QLINE streetcar which opened in 2017 on Woodward Avenue linking Grand Boulevard with downtown Detroit. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. This is the untold story of Lewis Chalmers, a Scottish mining capitalist who spent two decades chasing silver sixty miles south of the original Comstock Lode . In lengthy letters to friends and financiers in London, he chronicled his day-to-day struggles at multiple lodes in the mountains of Alpine County, California--from miners' strikes to fending off a series of financial disasters. In addition to hard-rock silver shafts, Chalmers' ambitious projects included the mammoth Isabella Tunnel, a nearly mile-long venture he promoted as a "Second Sutro." Part charming conman, part resourceful entrepreneur, part silver-tongued dreamer, Chalmers wangled funds from influential European friends to keep his mining enterprises going until 1885, when he returned to London. Remnants from his mining days still survive. But the true treasure he left behind was an extensive collection of letterbooks. Excerpts from Chalmers' business and personal correspondence provide a detailed record of his adventurous pursuit of silver and offer a fascinating glimpse into the mind of this brilliant, lively, and tenacious man. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Trolleys, Trams, and Light Rail Around The World covers the Pittsburgh light rail system with its downtown subway, street running, and private right of way. In the British Isles, the amazing Isle of Man is shown with its vintage open-air horse-drawn trams along with electric trams, as is Blackpool, England, with its neat, efficient, and well-patronized double deckers. Hong Kong has the world's largest fleet of double-decker trams and is extensively covered. Trolleys in Toronto, Canada, have been well-maintained over the years, and today Toronto has the largest trolley car system in North America. In Amsterdam, The Netherlands, the decision made by municipal authorities to re-equip its system with new tram cars was well received by the public and has resulted in the retention of the tram service. The decision in Helsinki, Finland, in 1969 to have trams only in the city center has been reversed, and the system has since been expanded. The tram system in Melbourne, Australia, has never shut down and is today the largest tram system in the English-speaking world. In a challenging world, this book clearly shows an exciting future for the trolley car. The trolley car once faced extinction. Kenneth Springirth's Trolleys, Trams, and Light Rail Around The World clearly shows its bright future. This must-read book captures the new role of the trolley car around the world. From the United States to United Kingdom, Switzerland to Australia, Hong Kong to Finland, the tram is alive. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. The USS Hornet CV-12 was launched in 1943 and served with distinction during the Second World War in the Pacific. After various modifications, she was active during the Cold War and the Vietnam War. Following this, she joined the Apollo Program and recovered astronauts from the Apollo 11 and 12 moon missions. After being decommissioned for the final time, she rested for decades in the mothball fleet and was destined for the scrapyard until saved and turned into a floating museum. Today, eighty years after construction began on her, USS Hornet CV-12 is still serving the country with distinction, this time as an educational venue and community asset. USS Hornet CV-12: Service in War and Peace tells the story of this ship from design and construction to service in times of war and peace. The design was a pre-war standard and before any lessons from the Second World War could be incorporated, the ship and its crew were able to meet every challenge. Hardcover. Condition: new. Hardcover. Howard Hughes was an industrialist, aviator, and eccentric, but he was also the most important movie producer during the golden age of Hollywood. At a time when filmmaking was tightly controlled and highly formulaic, Hughes used his enormous wealth to challenge the dictates and restrictions that defined the motion picture industry. Tackling subjects that were explicitly forbidden, he pushed the boundaries of onscreen sex and violence. He pioneered production and marketing techniques that were revolutionary, including the multimillion-dollar blockbuster and the promotion of scandal. When Hughes became the first person to completely own a major Hollywood studio, he continued his maverick approach to filmmaking as a mogul. Most importantly, Hughess role in the federal governments antitrust case against the industry led to the collapse of the entire studio system and the transformation of American cinema. Although his contributions are often overlooked, Hughes was instrumental in shaping the motion picture industry that exists today. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. H. Leslie Moody and Frances Johnson Moody never owned the company outright, but their dreams shaped North Carolina's Hyalyn Porcelain, Inc. and drove it forward to the satisfaction of an emerging, increasingly modern post-World War II America. Hyalyn's reputation for high quality led to its association with top designers like Michael and Rosemary Lax, Eva Zeisel, Georges Briard, Charles Leslie Fordyce, Herbert Cohen, Erwin Kalla, and Esta Brodey. Before moving to North Carolina in 1945, ceramic engineer and designer Less Moody prepared to organize and operate Hyalyn Porcelain, Inc. From Zanesville's Mosaic Tile Company, Ohio State University's ceramics department, Love Field Pottery, Abingdon Pottery, San Jose Potteries, and Rookwood Pottery, he gained expertise in clay formulation, glaze chemistry, product design, plant operation, project planning, advertising, and employee management. With the aid of investors, his dream came true when, in 1946, Hyalyn's first lamp bases and flower containers emerged from the shop's tunnel kiln.Thoroughly documented and illustrated with 425 images, hyalyn: America's Finest Porcelain is a complete history of Hyalyn Porcelain, Inc., and its successors, Hyalyn Cosco, Hyalyn, Ltd., and Vanguard Studios. Hardcover. Condition: new. Hardcover. Among other major navies, that of the United States put armed naval landing parties ashore during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Although done primarily to protect American interests, they also safeguarded international communities against the "savage hordes" of "uncivilized" nations. Specially designed light field guns carried aboard gunboats and larger warships sometimes supported the bluejackets and marines, customarily when larger parties more likely to face sharp actions went ashore. Most American naval landings of the nineteenth century took place in Africa, Asia, and Central and South America, whereas the following century saw landings against larger and otherwise civilized nations such as Mexico and Russia. The last of these landings were made in conjunction with the Allied assaults on North Africa in November 1942.The first purpose-built landing guns, the bronze Dahlgren muzzleloading smoothbore howitzers, saw extensive deployment during the Civil War, and postwar in Korea. The US Navy's very first steel breechloading guns were landing pieces. Five different marks of 3-inch breechloading guns and several guns of other calibers followed in successive decades, serving for varying periods. The history and characteristics of these landing guns are chronicled. For over seven decades, the USN built or purchased a number of landing guns of varying calibers. They were shipboard field guns intended to provide heavier firepower for armed parties of bluejackets or marines landed on foreign shores to quell rebellion. Such guns saw action in Africa, Asia, and the Americas. Gun features and histories are covered Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. The railroad station was at the heart of every town the trains passed through on Delmarva. These buildings were more than walls, floors, ceilings, and roofs--they served as the very heartbeat of their community. More than freight and passengers traveled through these buildings. News came in from the outside world, family members arrived home, and in a number of cases, they served as the town meeting place or a spot for locals to chew the fat. From grand three-story structures designed by some of America's most famous architects to small stations described by locals as nothing more than goat barns, the railroad stations of Delmarva ran the gamut of architectural design. Some rail lines chose a standard design to rapidly construct their stations while other lines chose a more unique design and varied construction methods. At its peak, the railroad stations of Delmarva numbered nearly 400 strong. Passenger service ended long ago, and with it most of these structures were eventually torn down. Thankfully, several stations survive today, and it is these monuments that we travel to in the pages of this book. Through the Peters Colony, many more families arrived in 1848-1850 and helped establish Ellis County. Several local men were elected to county offices in 1850. The earliest village in the vicinity was called Lebanon. The name Barkersville was used briefly because Rev. Charles Barker's home served as the first post office. The first railroad, Gulf, Colorado & Santa Fe, came through in 1883, and the Houston & Texas Central arrived in 1886, leading to Midlothian's incorporation in 1888. Many surrounding country villages became engulfed by Midlothian, such as Mt. Zion, Christian Chapel, Auger Hole, Onward, Walnut Grove, Long Branch, and Mountain Peak.Cotton was the chief crop grown in Ellis County for many years. World War II pulled Midlothian out of the depression, along with the rest of the country. Many returning servicemen chose to commute to Fort Worth or Dallas to do other things besides farming. Nowadays Midlothian is home to three cement plants that use the abundant limestone in cement production." Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Brighton and Allston Through Time outlines a neighborhood of the city of Boston which was once known as Little Cambridge before it became an independent town from Cambridge in 1807. With contemporary photographs by Peter B. Kingman, Anthony M. Sammarco has created a fascinating book of 19th- and 20th-century images that chronicles the history and development over the last hundred years. Once renowned throughout New England for its cattle industry as well as its horticultural gardens, Brighton and Allston became a well-known town. With prosperity, an ever-increasing population and proximity to the city of Boston, Brighton and Allston was annexed to the city in 1874 and henceforth became known as Ward 25. Over the century that followed, the neighborhood saw new places of worship, public and parochial schools, and housing ranging from one-family and two-family houses which were quickly augmented by three deckers and the largescale building of apartment buildings. During the first three decades of the 20th century, Brighton and Allston saw its population double, from 27,000 residents in 1910 to 47,000 residents by 1925 and today, with a population of 75,000 people, Brighton and Allston has a rich and ever evolving history, with demographics which are constantly in flux. Once known as Five Mile Beach, the wind-whipped forest and beaches transformed from fishing town to summer resort. Developers divided the ground into lots, hired architects to draw houses, and construction companies to build them. This all happened during an architectural transition period at the turn of the century, resulting in a diverse range of styles, from Victorian to Craftsman and Gothic to Colonial, many of which were as grand as those in Cape May. Although Wildwood's Victorian architecture was called noteworthy by architects, many homes were not appreciated or protected. Instead of being restored or renovated, they became run-down and were knocked down. But luckily, not all was lost. There are homeowners and developers who see potential in the Wildwoods' history and character. They accept the challenges of preservation, knowing the benefits it brings the community. These people are saving what makes the Wildwoods worth living in. Shipping may be from our UK warehouse or from our Australian or US warehouses, depending on stock availability.

Behind closed doors and hidden deep in forests, there are decaying secrets waiting to be discovered. At the start of the twentieth century, migrants were drawn to the up-and-coming industrial giant that was Pennsylvania. There were jobs and opportunities aplenty. Then, the economic bubble burst. Factories and steel mills closed, one by one. Families left in droves in search of work and a better life elsewhere. After the mass exodus, a wealth of infrastructure was rendered obsolete. Abandoned churches lay discarded, as small scattered congregations merge together. Schools and hospitals are left to rot. Forgotten theatres, once hosting sell-out performances, now lay silent and lost. The steam locomotives and trolley cars lie rusting and disused, obsolete in the face of new technology. One by one, these hidden treasures are lost as time and the world moves on around them. This book explores the beauty that lies in these forgotten places, often hiding in plain site on the streets of Pennsylvania. Series statement from publisher's website. Distressed wood and weathered remnants of human life are crossed by time and animal tracks, inviting one to picture what once was. Abandoned homes and buildings offer a unique, distressed beauty. While often overlooked by passers-by, their skeletal remains act as the perfect subject for the lens of a camera, quietly waiting to be captured and shared. Abandoned Tennessee explores this haunting narrative through its display of photos by abandoned building photographer Jay Farrell. Readers are encouraged to explore the forgotten corners of the state, see the world through different eyes, and take the long road home. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Over the past thirty-five years, a small team of explorers have surveyed the southern basin of Lake Michigan in search of World War II US Navy aircraft. The aircraft were lost during mishaps that occurred during an almost forgotten naval project which had trained thousands of aircraft carrier pilots between the years of 1942 through 1945.Because the explorers became so proficient at locating and recovering the aircraft, the Director of the National Naval Aviation Museum engaged them in an effort to rescue dozens of aircraft for presentation to the American public. Today, these wonderful machines, which had been used by the Greatest Generation to preserve the world's freedom and liberty, are viewed by and touch the lives of millions of people each year.As with all good things in life, it is the end result that is most known. The trials, troubles and effort to get there is almost always forgotten. This book tells the stories of how the exploration team succeeded through an odyssey within a realm no others have dared to enter. America Through Time is an imprint of Fonthill Media LLC. Book is published by Arcadia Publishing by arrangement with Fonthill Media. Shipping may be from our Sydney, NSW warehouse or from our UK or US warehouse, depending on stock availability.

Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. North Carolina's eighteenth and nineteenth-century Moravian potters were remarkable artisans whose products included coarse earthenware, slip-trailed decorated ware, Leeds-type fine pottery, press-molded stove tiles, figural bottles, toys, and salt-glazed stoneware. Silesian-born and German-trained potter Gottfried Aust was the first to arrive in Bethabara in 1755. After that, numerous apprentices of his carried on the trade in the state and beyond. Some apprentices rose to the rank of master potter. Aust's most successful protege, Rudolph Christ, excelled in the creation of Queensware, faience, and tortoiseshell-glazed pottery. Swiss-born Heinrich Schaffner, one of several more Moravian master potters, is famously known for his "Salem smoking pipes." Today, museums and private collectors vigorously compete for scarce examples of North Carolina-made Moravian pottery. Every piece found and preserved is like a new paragraph added to the story of the art and mystery of pottery-making in one of the South's earliest settlements. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. New Jersey's Trolley Heritage is a photographic essay of trolley cars that once served Atlantic City, Ocean City, and Wildwood, plus the modernized Newark City subway, along with the new Hudson-Bergen Light Rail Line and River Line. From 1889 to 1955, electric trolley cars served commuters and vacationers in Atlantic City. Between 1938 and 1955, Atlantic City operated twenty-five streamlined Brilliners known as the Miss America Fleet, the largest fleet of these cars in service in the United States. The Shore Fast Line connected Atlantic City via Pleasantville and Somers Point to Ocean City. A portion of the Pennsylvania-Reading Seashore Lines was used by the Shore Fast Line. Open summer cars operated in Wildwood until it closed in 1945. After trolley service ended in Atlantic City, Newark's City Subway was New Jersey's only remaining trolley line until New Jersey Transit opened the Hudson-Bergen Line in 2000, and by 2011, linked North Bergen with Hoboken, Jersey City, and Bayonne. New Jersey's Trolley Heritage documents an important part of the state's trolley history including the River Line, which opened in 2004, connecting Camden with Trenton. • Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. John Charles Fremont popularly known as The Pathfinder during his times--played a major role in opening up the American West to settlement by pioneers. His reliable accounts, including published maps, narrations, and scientific documentations of his expeditions, guided emigrants overland into the West starting in the mid-1840s. Fremont was born illegitimate to a Quebecois father and a Virginian mother. Through the lucky circumstance of obtaining highly influential patrons at his parents' adopted home city of Charleston, South Carolina, he was appointed second lieutenant in the United States Topographical Corps and quickly rose within its ranks. Through the influence of his father-in-law, Senator Thomas Hart Benton of Missouri--the powerful chairman of the Senate Committee on Military Affairs--he led his first expedition to the Rocky Mountains in 1842. His second expedition--the subject of this book-- succeeded in charting all of the way to California, mapping and confirming the Oregon Trail as the route for pioneers heading toward the West. This book is a reprint of John Charles Fraemont's original text published in 1845, with the addition of an introduction and further history and information provided by the editor. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Philadelphia's Streetcar Heritage is a photographic essay of the Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, streetcar system. The first electric streetcar line in Philadelphia opened in 1892 and quickly replaced horsecar service by 1897. Streetcar lines were merged into the Philadelphia Rapid Transit Company (PRT) in 1902 to achieve a unified system. There were 1,500 new streetcars purchased by 1913, which was the largest fleet of standardized streetcars ever purchased by one transit company. Ridership dropped during the Depression, and PRT reorganized as the Philadelphia Transportation Company (PTC) in 1940. After National City Lines (NCL) obtained control of PTC in 1955, many streetcar lines became bus operated. Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA) acquired PTC in 1968. The overhaul of 112 Presidents' Conference Committee (PCC) cars began in 1979. Kawasaki Heavy Industries built 112 streetcars (light rail vehicles) for the subway surface lines. With buses taking over Route 15 (Girard Avenue) in 1992, only five subway surface lines remained. SEPTA restored Route 15 streetcar service in 2005 using Brookville Equipment Corporation rebuilt PCCII cars. Philadelphia's Streetcar Heritage documents the city's streetcars, including Fairmount Park Trolleys and trackless trolleys. Hardcover. Condition: new. Hardcover. The Ilyushin Il-2 Shturmovik became the aerial representative of the Soviet response to the German invasion on the Eastern Front during the Second World War. The Il-2 was designed as a low-level close-support aircraft capable of defeating enemy armour and other ground targets. Hardly a fighter, the Il-2 was exclusively engineered to take an enormous amount of punishment and still keep the pilot, rear gunner and critical mechanical components unharmed. In the end, the Il-2 would become the most important aircraft to the Soviet Union in the defence of the homeland against advancing hordes of panzers. At its height, production of the Il-2 hit a peak of 300 aircraft per month and variants boasted potent 23-mm cannon, 200 anti-tank bomblets and 4 x 132-mm rockets. The Il-2 became a highly respected and highly feared adversary. Soviet air crews dubbed the Il-2 as the 'Flying Tank' for its incredible ability to withstand a tremendous amount of damage and still release its payload only to return home intact. Not only did its rear gunners shoot down Luftwaffe aces thanks to its 12.7 -mm machine gun, the Il-2 was also used as a fighter and German pilots were amazed to see 20-mm cannon shells bouncing off its armour plates. Crews were also known to weld additional armour to their Il-2s. The Shturmovik proved so effective that many Soviet crews were recipients of the Gold Star of Hero of the Soviet Union. Even today, the Il-2 is regarded as the Russian equivalent of the Spitfire.By the war's end, some 36,000 Il-2s were produced and became the symbol of the Eastern Front. The most comprehensive reference work on the Il-2 Shturmovik attack aircraft, the iconic Red Army warplane of the Second World War Shipping may be from our UK warehouse or from our Australian or US warehouses, depending on stock availability.
