Book
Octavo, drawings by Alberto Guiraldes, bound in imitation green leather, front and spine panels stamped in gold, top edge stained red. Facsimile reprint of the 1935 Shakespeare Head edition. Epic poem about cowboy life in Argentina. The translator, Walter Owen, was a member of the Inklings writer group in England, and wrote a witchcraft novel, MORE THINGS IN HEAVEN (1947). This copy has been modified by an earlier owner into a de facto bilingual edition by pasting in sections of the original Spanish text next to each translated stanza. Also pasted in is a section of a dust jacket panel and some other related material. With dated ownership signature and business card of previous owner. The rectangles of pasted Spanish text are on acidic paper which has produced offsetting to the adjoining pages, and this addition of material also has puffed up the fore-edge of the binding. A curiosity. (#142671).

Bilingual edition (English on versos and Spanish on rectos). Octavo. 264, [6, index] pp. Bound in full laced cowhide, author and title and picture of gaucho branded onto front cover, thong and tab closure. A very nice binding."Martin Fierro is a 2,316 line epic poem by the Argentine writer José Hernandez. The poem was originally published in two parts, El Gaucho Martín Fierro (1872) and La Vuelta de Martín Fierro (1879). The poem is, in part, a protest against the modernist tendencies of Argentine president Domingo Faustino Sarmiento. As well, the poem supplied a historical link to the gauchos' contribution to the national development of Argentina, for the gaucho had played a major role in Argentina's independence from Spain" (Wiki).
