A transcription and translation of the Historia Fundationis, taken from Oxford, Bodleian Library MS Dodsworth 63 (fol. 9r-31r and 42r-56r), which is all that is left of the original history taken from the badly damaged cartulary by Roger Dodsbury between 1642 and 1649. Contents include a 31 page Introduction; The Historical Account of the Foundations of the abbeys of Byland and Jervaulx [A Transcription of Latin text with English translation on facing page]; Bibliography; Index [From introduction] The abbeys that are the subject of this foundation narrative, Byland and Jervaulx, were two of the thirteen British houses of the congregation of Savigny. Founded in the county of Mortain in northern France on the borders of Normandy, Brittany and Maine, the abbey of Savigny shared characteristics with a number of contemporary monastic reform movements: a return to a strict observance of the Rule of St Benedict, simplicity and poverty. The congregation that spread from Savigny into other areas of France and into England and Wales became incorporated into the Cistercian order in 1147.1 Both Byland and Jervaulx are distinguished for their turbulent early history, for which the Historia is the fullest, indeed in some particulars, the only source. It charts the establishment of refugee monks from Calder (Cumberland) at their first Yorkshire site of Hood (1138) through three further moves to their final site, where the remains of Byland's Gothic church and claustral buildings still stand. Byland's history is presented as a struggle against local landowners, involvement in tenurial rivalry between its founder and patron and other secular lords, and above all disputes about its own affiliation and subjection. . . The convent known in its early years as Fors, St Mary of Charity, and Wensleydale, was established in 1150 as a daughter house of Byland. Six years later, in 1156, the monks moved to a more auspicious site, at Jervaulx. All these local events, so vividly described in the Historia, are set against the broader backdrop of the English and European scene - the civil war between King Stephen and the Empress Matilda; the growth of the Cistercian order; the merger with Savigny; and the Second Crusade - and intermingle with them.
