It combines the pithy good sense of Strunk & White's "Elements of Style" with the tongue-in-cheek humor of H. W. Fowler's "Modern English Usage" to produce the equivalent of Amy Vanderbilt's "Etiquette" for the e-set. While most of us take emailing for granted (and, unfortunately, never -- or only rarely -- think about how our message might be received at the other end), David Shipley and Will Schwalbe take us behind the electronic curtain to show us that digital yellow-brick roads might well conceal oodles of anti-personnel devices, most of them of our own unconscious design. "All ye who enter here." might do well to stand at the portal to the World Wide Web. Unfortunately, there's no such warning. And so, all of us -- too glibly, too happily, too unreflectively -- bound through without first taking the time to learn some basic do's and don't's. Shipley and Schwalbe have compiled such a list -- and have provided anecdotes and illustrations aplenty to make digesting that list an eminently enjoyable undertaking. If, for example, you should ever experience "a sudden chill in the ether," you need only turn to page 131 to discover a possible source of the temperature drop between you and your pretended e-pal(s). While "Five Words That Almost Everyone Misuses" (p. 121) certainly wasn't necessary to any reader who's spent a pleasantly sardonic afternoon with Mr. or Mrs. Malaprop, "This Is Annoying How" is the kind of literary circus act that leaves us gasping with delight. If you're one of those readers who enjoyed Lynn Truss's "Eats(,) Shoots & Leaves" -- not only for its usefulness, but also for its moxy -- "Send" is your kind of book. If you're NOT that kind of reader, buy it anyway -- it may save (you) a friend.

Intelligent, thoughtful and lucidly expressed, Engle's new novel portrays a man trying to come to terms with a void in his life. After selling his small chain of bookstores around Boston, Ben Morrison looks forward to a promised administrative position at a fledgling community college, with the possibility of a teaching job, too. But he has a strong feeling that his good fortune hasn't been earned, that catastrophe is waiting to strike, and he experiences a disquieting lack of direction as each day dawns. Ben feels distanced from his familyhis wife Lucky seems self-absorbed; his sons live far from home; his daughter Sarah, a lawyer, is having difficulty in her relationship with her lover Carl, a former activist with an uncertain future. In addition, Lucky's mother Faith, whose spirit Ben has long admired and whose insights he has relied upon, is dying. When Carl's past appears to imperil his application for a government-funded grant, Ben attempts to intervene and, in the process of untangling some consequences of Carl's actions, uncovers the roots of his own hopes and convictions. As Lucky plans her mother's 85th birthday celebration, Sarah announces she is pregnant, and Faith's condition worsens. Engel, head of Harvard's writing program and author of Fish and Voyager Belsky, conveys the subtle shifts of his characters' emotional equilibrium with respect and attention. Their conversation, in particular, is luminous, as carefully wrought and revealing as discourse in the novels of Henry James.

Ruth Puttermesser, a highly educated, unlucky-in-love but rather mystical existence as a Jewish woman in New York City, has been chronicled in previously published stories appearing occasionally through the years. The Puttermesser Papers collects the old stories, along with several new ones, combined to create a funny and surreally picaresque narrative, touching upon Puttermesser's job at a blueblood law firm, her creation and intellectual sparring with the golem she makes out of soil from her flowerpots, her term as mayor of New York, her own death by murder, and, yes, beyond. First Edition [1997]; Sixth Printing in the same year.

Set in Alaska in the late 19th century, this novel is the story of a diverse group of people - Eskimos, Irish, Japanese and North American - brought together by the gold rush and strangely influenced by the alien landscape in which they find themselves. Richard Wiley has also written "Soldiers in Hiding", the recipient of the Pen/Faulkener Prize. Wiley's second novel is a subdued, reflective portrait of the adventurers and fortune-seekers who journeyed to the barely settled town of Nome, Alaska, in 1899, hoping to ride the crest of a gold rush. What many found instead was a harsh Arctic climate that offered little in the way of sustenance, let alone wealth. Coming from worlds as distant and different as America, Ireland and Japan, the explorers had to learn to trust one another's cultural rituals and those of the indigenous Eskimo population. The author interweaves several stories as they unfold over the course of a year. Some of them are straight and vivid: an old Japanese man keeps himself company through the long freeze by recounting the entire history of his country; a young woman opens the town's first bathhouse, later using it as a political base; a preacher holds his flock by creating Bible stories with such characters as Andrew the Suicidal.

It evokes a wonderful sense of place, reveals characters and their relationships in all their ambiguity and complexity (and what relationship is not complex and ambiguous?) and begins with the glorious premise: just how far can a misunderstanding unravel a marriage? It's worth reading just for the wise asides. I could not put this book down.

This story is told in short chapters, narrated by the two main characters - by Chris, a lonely man who lives with a passionless wife and by Roza, a young woman he meets on the street and propositions, under the mistaken belief that she was working as a prostitute. This unlikely couple end up meeting and having regular talks at Roza's dilapidated home, where she tells him stories about her life. We wonder if Roza is an unreliable narrator, but we want to believe her, and so does Chris. Her stories charm Chris, so much so that he begins to fall for Roza, and he craves her company and fantasizes about making her his lover. He is falling in love with her, and she seems to be caring for him, too, despite her tales getting wilder and more sordid. We learn early on that these characters do not end up together, and that this is the cause of quite a bit of regret. By the end of the book, we find out why, and what happened. I enjoyed the book a great deal. It can be very funny at times, and yet there are also some horrendous passages. This story tells us something about lost opportunities, and about living life to the fullest.

Troubled by ghosts of the past, the asthmatic, solitary narrator of this psychosexually chilling short novel has totally repressed a shocking secret. Triggered by current sensory images, it emerges slowly in fragmentary memories that have blocked full awareness. Finally she remembers the crime she committed against a schoolmate, which now haunts her until she can face its memory. "No man is an island," said John Donne, but Kohler believes in the privacy of "islands." A bizarre, cerebral memoir that unfolds slowly and deliberately in a series of almost impressionistic sensory images. Recommended.

French playwright and novelist Reza wryly channels the thoughts of the titular depressed, unhappily married 47-year-old writer: he has just been diagnosed by his optometrist with partial thrombosis and probable glaucoma, while his wife, Irene, an engineer, seems to no longer love or care for him. With obsessions about his mortality, marriage, and failed book crashing about his head, Adam finds himself watching the ostriches in Paris's Jardin des Plantes, periodically cell-phoning his contentedly-coupled friend Albert. Recognizing Adam in the park, Marie-Thérèse Lyoc, with her bags full of the merchandise she sells to zoos and amusement parks, is energetic and talkative; in lycée, she was the invisible, faceless slave to another girl Adam loved. Out of grim resignation, Adam agrees to drive back with this open, talkative "nauseatingly robust ghost from the past" to her apartment in the suburbs while Marie-Thérèse cooks dinner for him, and eventually shares with him a letter that reveals how she once pined for him. This revelation, 30-years-ripe, paralyzes him. In her penetrating, repetitive monologue, Reza collapses Adam's entire sense of himself, and renders his ordinariness touching, even majestic.
