Sie sind aus einer internationalen altertumswissenschaftlichen Tagung über den antiken Dialog, die 2011 in Bamberg stattgefunden hat, hervorgegangen. Der gemeinsame Fragehorizont der Beiträge gilt dem Verhältnis von Form, Inhalt und Funktion, mithin dem Dialog als literarischer Gattung. Dabei wird bewusst von einer eingeschränkten Definition der Gattung Dialog abgesehen, welche den hierarchiefreien Austausch unterschiedlicher Positionen sowie die Ergebnisoffenheit des inszenierten Gesprächs als entscheidende gattungsrelevante Kriterien betrachtet. Stattdessen liegt den Beiträgen ein offeneres, auf dem formalen Kriterium der Wechselrede basierendes Gattungsverständnis des literarischen Dialogs zugrunde, da dieses eine wertungsfreie Betrachtung der unterschiedlichen Formen und ihrer Intentionen ermöglicht. Erst ein solcher offener Zugang erlaubt es, die gesamte Bandbreite des literarischen Dialogs auszumessen. Sie reicht von seiner Nutzung als Medium eines offenen philosophischen Diskurses, wie ihn etwa ein Teil der Dialoge Platons bietet, bis zu seiner Inanspruchnahme für die Memorierung eines begrenzten Wissensbereichs, wie man sie in Unterrichtsgesprächen katechetischer Form findet. Auf diese Weise kann das Feld an Möglichkeiten, das die Gattung im Laufe ihrer antiken Wirkungsgeschichte herausgebildet hat, erschlossen werden. Aus diesem Grunde ist es Anliegen des Bandes, im Rahmen seiner Möglichkeiten ein nicht nur in chronologischer, sondern auch in formaler Hinsicht breites Spektrum an Dialogen zu analysieren und dabei in unterschiedlicher Ausprägung theoretische und literaturgeschichtliche Perspektiven aufeinander zu beziehen. Anspruch des Bandes ist es somit, ein wo nicht vollständiges, so doch umfassendes und theoretisch reflektiertes Panorama des literarischen Dialogs der Antike in seiner Vielfalt zu bieten und auf diese Weise zu weiteren komparatistischen Studien der Gattung anzuregen. Entsprechend der Tatsache, dass die Beliebtheit des literarischen Dialogs weit über die Antike hinaus bis in die Moderne reicht, richtet sich der Sammelband in gleichem Maße an Altertumswissenschaftler wie an Mediävisten, Neuphilologen und, insofern es sich beim literarischen Dialog um eine der produktivsten Gattungen des theoretischen Diskurses handelt, nicht zuletzt an Philosophiehistoriker. 448 pp. Deutsch.
