Book First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Very Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Fine. First Edition Thus. Harper & Row, Publishers, New York, New York, U.S.A., 1971. First Edition Thus, "First U. S. Edition" stated. First published in the UK in 1928 as Postures (a title the author abhorred) and then in the USA in 1929 by Simon and Schuster as Quartet (the title the author wanted). Both original publications are extremely rare. Very Fine in Very Fine Dust Jacket. Unread. The Text Block is clean, soft white, very tight, straight and square, with deckled fore-edges and no markings of any kind. The Binding is red quarter cloth to gray boards, with bright red endpapers, bright black title, etc., to spine, and all corners square and sharp. The Dust Jacket would be flawless but for a very small nick at the top rear of the spine. The original price ($4.95) is intact on the front flap. See photos. 186 pages. 5 5/8" x 8 1/4". A roman à clef, this autobiographical fiction is based on the author's affair with Ford Madox Ford while living in his Paris home with him and his wife, and while her own husband was in jail for embezzlement. This work launched the author's career as a novelist. It was the basis for the 1981 Merchant Ivory film of the same name, starring Isabelle Adjani, Maggie Smith and Alan Bates.
