Book
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Second edition. SECOND EDITION, CIR. 1694. This is a rare book not found in English Short Title Catalogue. It appears to be a second edition of a title that is in the ESTC, being "A collection of cases and other discourses lately written to recover dissenters to the communion of the Church of England. By some divines of the city of London. In two volumes." ESTC citation # R12519. 1685. Our book, which we will call the second edition, is a one volume edition of the 1685 title with some changes. (1) Many essays in the first edition have their own title pages, but this is not the case in the second edition. (2) The first edition has an essay entitled "The Charge of Scandal, and giving Offence by Conâ?£formity, refelled, and reflected back upon Separation." probably by Dr. Stillingfleet. This essay is not included in our second edition but a different title, "The Church of England free from the Imputation of Popery" by Dr. Hooper, Dean of Canterbury, is included. Thus both editions have 23 essays. (3) The second edition (our book) does not have a statement of publisher or date. The second edition has, immediately after the text, a one page catalogue of some Books printed for Benj. Tooke, thus we presume this is the publisher. The first edition was published by T. Basset and B. Tooke. Our copy, the presumed second edition with a slightly different title, has 507 pp. followed by the one page catalogue, followed by a two page Table of the Texts of Scripture, followed by a two page Table of those Authors who are Cited in this Book. How did we date this book? One of the contributors is stated to be Dr. Tillotson, Lord Arch-Bishop of Canterbury. Tillotson served as Archbishop of Canterbury from 1691 to 1694, thus we date the book c1694. The Title Page reads "To the Right Honourable, and Right Reverend Father in God, Henry, By Divine Permission, Lord Bishop of London, Dean of Their Majesties Chappel, and one of Their Majesties most Honourable Privy Council, This Collection of Discourses, In Defence of The Church of England: With all Dutiful Submission, is Inscribed, Presented, and Dedicated: By His Lordship's Most Humble and Most Obedient Servants, The Editors." The title page is followed by a two page Catalogue of all the Cases and Discourses contained .This is the same format as the first edition. Two leaves before the Title page appear to have been removed. The text block is solid and in very good condition. The covers are slightly loose and their leather is badly peeling away from the boards giving a tattered look. Hubbed spine with no printing or labels. Additional photos available upon request. Full refund if not satisfied.
