Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu.

28 pp. Deutsch.

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Seminar paper from the year 2005 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Region: Africa, grade: 1,3, University of Potsdam (Institut für Politikwissenschaft), course: Democracy and Good Governance in Developing Countries, language: English, abstract: This paper provides an explanation for the continuous failure of peace processes in Somalia over the last decade, using based on an extended rational choice / public choice approach. Based on the concept of 'Spoilers' and their main motives as outlined by Schneckener (2003), it provides a mapping of the main actors in stateless Somalia and analyses their respective motives. As a result, this paper argues that the behavior of the main actors in Somalia is completely rational. The two main motives out of which the actors involved have spoiled peace processes in the past reflect the basic dichotomy that has been discussed in recent literature concerning intra-state wars. The most important reason for spoiling peace processes in Somalia is greed, which applies mostly to local warlords and businessmen as well as to international companies. To a lesser degree also neighboring countries are affected by greed. The second important motive is grievance; which affects mostly neighboring countries as external actors, and - to a lesser degree - 'separatist' actors from the northern autonomous regions of Somalia. Two other motives - 'creed' and 'autism of violence' are not as important, but also play a distinct role for some actors, in the first case foremost for members of local militias, in the latter case for the 'separatist' regions. Based on the detailed analysis, this paper provides a summary mapping of the relevant actors according to their predominant motives. It concludes with some strategies on how to deal with the different Spoilers in the Somali context. 24 pp. Englisch.

28 pp. Deutsch.

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -This paper examines the role of Islamic fundamentalists in Somalia from the colonial period to the present. The analysis takes into account factors that (are said to) inspire Islamic movements worldwide as well factors specific to the region, namely the four elementary pillars of Somali society (Sufism, nationalism, clanism, and Islamism). The paper pays particular attention to the key players within Somalia and to the influence external (i.e. non-Somali) actors exert on them. The combined approach used here offers considerable explanatory power in accounting for why the political influence of Islamic fundamentalists in Somalia has varied over time. The fluctuation of Islamic fundamentalist influence shows that there exist certain ideologies in Somalia that have shaped the country s history through all political periods. The paper draws on these overarching ideologies to draw (tentative) conclusions on current events (2006/07) in Somalia. 88 pp. Englisch.

Hardcover. Condition: new. Hardcover. Would it have been possible to build a unified and democratic Germany half a century before the fall of the Berlin Wall? This book reassesses this question by exploring Germany's division after the Second World War from the point of view of the SED, the communist-led and Soviet-sponsored ruling party of East Germany.Drawing on unpublished documents from the SED archives, Dr Spilker rejects claims that the East German comrades and their Sovietmasters had abandoned their struggle for socialism and were willing to accept a democratic Germany in exchange for a pledge to neutrality. He argues that the communists' sudden switch to a multi-partyapproach at the end of the war was a tactical move inspired not by a desire for compromise but by the mistaken belief that they could win political hegemony - and the chance to introduce socialism throughout Germany - through the ballot box.Communist optimism, as this book shows, rested on specific assumptions about the situation after the war, all of which revolved around the prospect of political instability and social unrest in West Germany. The comrades in East Berlindid not just say that their regime would ultimately prevail, they genuinely believed it. Nor should their hopes be dismissed as a mere fantasy. In the aftermath of the war, the economic gap between thetwo Germanies was still relatively narrow and West Germany's future success as a magnet for the people in East Germany was by no means guaranteed. This is the most detailed and up-to-date study of the division of Germany after the Second World War. Drawing on a wealth of unpublished documents, Dirk Spilker reveals the political realities of the situation in post-war Germany, and reassesses the motivations and actions of the Western Allies and the Soviet bloc as they manoeuvred to achieve their ends.
