Hardcover. Condition: New. Shringara, Sringara, Śṛṅgāra, Sringar (love) is the dominant rasa, or aesthetic flavor, that has been interpreted in literature, philosophy, the visual and performing arts amidst other rasas - Śṛṅgāra (erotic), Hāsyam (comic), Kāruṇyam (pathetic), Raudram (fury), Veeram (heroic), Bhayānakam (fearful), Bībhatsa (odious) and Adbhutam (marvellous), Shantam (peaceful). Spiritual love through dance is a core consciousness in the Indian subcontinent documented in the 2000-year-old Nāṭyaśāstra and shared in temple dance and sculpture since then. Such dance lexicons were culled out of western spiritual traditions over roughly the same time period. The concept of communicating unselfish, unconditional spiritual love through the metaphors of mundane human love is intrinsic to Indian aesthetic and philosophical traditions. The chapters of this book offer insights into both the shared and unique understanding and performance of shringara in various classical Indian dance traditions. 'Nritya Kalanidhi' Guru Lakshmi Vishwanathan kindly contributed an introductory overview of Śṛṅgāra in Nāṭya (communicative dance) to contextualize the focus on specific classical genres that follows. Performing artists recognized for their scholarship have contributed chapters on the ways Sringara has developed historically and been interpreted and passed on over generations in seven of India's classical dance traditions Bharatanatyam, Kuchipudi, Vilāsini Nātyam, Mohiniattam, Sattriya, Kathak and Odissi. Respectively, Kamalini Dutt, Anuradha Jonnalagadda, Anupama Kylash, Bharati Shivaji, Anwesa Mahanta, Shovana Narayan and editor Sharon Lowen, have shared their lifelong involvement with these aesthetic cultural traditions that explore the erotic as a form of Bhakti (devotion) that provides a pathway for us to transform conventional reality to metaphysical dimensions. The extensive photographs of the expression of Shringara Bhakti can aid the reader in seeing and experiencing the aesthetic pleasure.

Hardcover. Condition: New. This publication gathers history, transformations and choreographies in the field of Manipuri dance traditions primarily from the perspective of practitioners experiences, recollections and proficiency. The book aims to collate a gamut of themes ranging from the dances performed in the centuries-old socio-religious ritual the Lai Haraoba, as well as contemporary, thematic productions staged for a curious audience. The book is a compilation of essays penned by renowned artists as well as emerging dancers and scholars who highlight a broad range of interests, information, experiences, and practices associated with Manipuri dance style(s). Manipuri dance tradition can be viewed as the oldest and the youngest classical dance style of India. Believed to have originated thousands of years ago from the rituals and oral traditions performed by indigenous communities residing in the region now called Manipur, movements and philosophies have undergone metamorphosis and developed into practices which were very distinct from rest of India. Since late 18th century, with the influence of Gaudiya Vaishnav texts, philosophy, poetic and musical styles, new rituals and forms of dancing such as the Raaslila and Nata Sankirtana came to exist alongside the Meitei community practices of Huiyen Lallong and Lai Haraoba each of which shaped the landscape of Manipuri dance today. These movement traditions are recognised as living traditions where dance and music are offered to the pantheons of many divinities every season. This publication attempts to bring the many dimensions of Manipuri dance to fore most importantly, how rituals that are danced can also take the shape of a choreography, and how movements traverse between enshrined spaces and the proscenium stage. This publication has been conceived and planned for the Silver Jubilee celebration of Purbachal Navanandanik Movement Arts (Kolkata, India) an institution specialising on classical Manipuri dance founded in 1996 by Vidus.

"The classical performing arts of India, with millennia of antecedents, languished during the colonial period and were revitalized during India's pre-independence conscious reclaiming of heritage. The efforts of many great individuals in sustaining and reconstructing traditions played a vital role in contributing to this vital aspect of national identity. Post independence, these arts contributed to a sense of national integration as they were embraced by exponents from regions and communities beyond the original parameters of location, language, religion or caste. The last quarter of a century has seen these classical genres draw increasing numbers of exponents from beyond India's borders and widely diverse communities within India. This book originated from the issues of Indian classical performing arts in the world context of presentation, performance, training and learning and traditions in today's milieu by students and artists from non-traditional backgrounds. Many of the ideas presented here were first shared during seminars in the '90's bringing together artists, gurus, and arts scholars, in conjunction with a unique series of classical Indian dance and music festivals that changed the perception that non-Indian practitioners of these arts could be regarded as artists and not simply students. The concept of the Videshi Kalakar Utsavs (Festivals of Dance and Music by artists on non-Indian origin), was reflected in some of the Art without Frontiers: Indian Arts on the Move Seminar issues as audiences in India experienced the performances of artists who learned their art forms after spending their formative years in another culture. How are they drawn to the tradition? How do they enter into the tradition? How does any student in modern times enter?".
