Un des villageois, Timmo, décide de rester lorsque les autorités militaires engagent une politique de la terre brûlée en mettant le feu à la quasi-totalité des maisons, afin de ne rien laisser aux troupes soviétiques dont l'avancée menace. Timmo vit un peu en marge de cette communauté, et on va donc le laisser faire. Il s'installe dans l'une des rares maisons encore intactes du village, puis, à l'arrivée des troupes russes, sera contraint de travailler pour eux : il est bûcheron, et avec les températures qui descendent jusqu'à moins quarante degrés, le bois est indispensable à la survie des troupes. Mais surtout, Timmo aura à s'occuper d'un petit groupe de soldats russes que l'on installe avec lui, et c'est cette relation tissée entre eux par les ennemis, malgré les problèmes linguistiques, qui est au coeur du livre. La méfiance, la nécessité de s'entraider pour survivre, l'hostilité de principe et finalement des sentiments fraternels, voire d'amitié, ponctuent le quotidien de ce petit groupe. Timmo est-il en train de pactiser avec l'ennemi ? L'écriture de Jacobsen est d'une grande simplicité, mais aussi d'une vraie efficacité. On suit avec passion cette aventure un peu improbable d'un homme pris dans les contradictions de la guerre. Toute l'action se déroule dans un village presque entièrement brûlé, sous la neige et dans des conditions climatiques très dures, et Jacobsen parvient avec peu de moyens à faire surgir sous nos yeux ce cadre inhabituel.
