Ils se baptisent Les Lointains, écrivent des nouvelles, publient dans des magazines, découvrent d'autres jeunes, passionnés comme eux de science-fiction, dont une jeune fille dont ils tombent éperdument amoureux.La première partie du roman, " Cette planète ", est narrée par Isaac. Il relate son enfance avec Ezra et apprend qu'il est l'exécuteur testamentaire d'un certain Warren Wilbur Zack (qui n'est pas sans rappeler Philip K. Dick), auteur incompris d'un mystérieux roman de science- fiction, Évasion. Isaac, qui écrit des feuilletons SF pour la télévision, a le sentiment d'avoir raté sa vie. Il aurait aimé bâtir des histoires où il ne se passe rien, où se succèdent de " lents couchers de soleil ", à la manière du Solaris de Stanislas Lem, et revit, de manière obsessionnelle, ce qu'il appelle L'Incident et qui n'est autre qu'un rendez-vous avec Ezra au sommet d'une des tours jumelles, au moment où, deux jours avant le 11 septembre 2001, deux avions s'encastrent dans les immeubles. A l'instant de l'explosion, qui a donc lieu dans le futur, Isaac se rappelle la nuit où, avec Ezra, il a construit des bonshommes et une planète de neige pour une merveilleuse jeune fille qui les regardait derrière sa fenêtre.Ezra disparaît pendant plusieurs années et raconte la seconde partie du roman, " L'espace entre cette planète et l'autre planète ". Il est militaire à Grynarya (lire Green aerea), en Irak, sous les ordres d'un colonel devenu fou, à la merci du chef ennemi, le " Démolisseur", qu'il finira par assassiner. Cette partie du roman, pleine de fulgurances, est un impressionnant hommage à Abattoir 5 de Kurt Vonnegut.La troisième partie " Une autre planète " est le récit, par la jeune fille, de plusieurs fins du monde possibles. Extraterrestre, elle observe la planète Terre, et se souvient, elle aussi, d'Isaac et d'Ezra et de cet unique moment d'amour absolu, une nuit de son enfance à New York. Dans cette partie tout à fait extraordinaire et d'une beauté envoûtante, la métaphore de l'auteur capable, par le choc esthétique que doit constituer le langage, de transformer un genre romanesque en fait littéraire, est évidente et met en avant la réflexion qui sous-tend toute l'oeuvre de Rodrigo Fresan. - Nombre de page(s) : 1 vol.
