Magazine / Periodical First Edition
Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. 227-241 pages with bibliography. Royal octavo (10" x 6 3/4") bound in original publisher's wrappers. Ethnology Volume XLIV Number 3 complete issue. First edition. In India, caste groups ensure their durability in an era of multiculturalism by officially representing caste as cultural difference or ethnicity rather than as unequal descent-based relations. Challenging dominant social theories of caste, this book addresses questions of how caste survives the system that gave rise to it and adapts to new demands of capitalism and democracy. Based on original fieldwork, the book shows how the terrain of culture captured by a new grammar of caste revitalizes castes as cultural communities so that the culture of a caste is produced, organized and naturalized in the process of transforming jati (fetishized blood and kinship) into samaj (fetishized culture). Castes are shown to not be homogenous cultural wholes but sites of hegemony where class, gender and hierarchy over-determine the meanings and materiality of caste. Arguing that there exists a new casteism in India akin to a new racism in the USA, built less on biology and descent and more on purported cultural differences and their rights to exist, the book presents an extended critique and a search for an alternative view of caste and anti-casteist politics. It is of interest to students and scholars of South Asian culture and society. Condition: Light edge wear with bumped corners else very good.

Hardcover. Condition: New. 1st Edition. From time immemorial, the Indian sub-continent had constantly been attracting the avaricious attention of the invaders for its rich culture and wealth. With the advent of Islam Muslim invaders had their field day when they invaded India. With new hitherto unheard of warfare, Hindu kings fell like nine pins. Muslim rulers' might and their penchant for Islam had started changing the religious contours of India. For the first time Indians had to subserve the interests of an alien ruler whose faith was also alien to them. Starting from Muhammad bin Qasim, Mahmud of Ghazni, Ghoriand Delhi Sultanates down to the Mughals Babur, Humayun, Akbar, Jahangir, Shahjahan and Aurangzeb one can fine a detailed presentation of their rules in this work. Their idiosyncrasies, megalomaniac tendencies, amorous behaviours, administrative capabilities innovative approaches, utter callousness and brutality are detailed in this book. The book presents both the darker and brighter side of the rulers and the readers can be the judges.

First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: New. 1st Edition. Islam spread like wild-fire annihilating the local faiths followed by people. Within a century of its inception, it established itself firmly in the peninsular Arabia, Levant, Iran, Northern Africa and Spain. Military conquests of the Arabs brought in its wake Islam to the conquered lands. Unlike Christianity Islam has never been a missionary religion. The debate centres round its spread. One set of writers vouches for its peaceful propagation, another vehemently points to the use of force, Popularly known as 'Sword Theory.' With regards to India, Islam could not totally obliterate the local faiths in spite of its having been the religion of the rulers for nearly thousand years. Some attribute the caste system of the Hindus, some to the sword power of the Muslim rulers, some to the sufis and some to the sops offered by the rulers to the prospective converts as reasons for spread of Islam in India. But none to the inner strength of Hinduism which the book highlights here and there. This book discusses the role of Sufis in detail. It also brings out facts and convincing arguments on the destruction to temples by the Muslim rulers. Truly a handbook of Truths!.
