Trade paperback. Condition: Good. [2] 176, [and approximately 60 pages in Hebrew]. Footnotes. Minor page edge rippling at front. Includes articles in English and Hebrew on Book Reviews, Featured Reviews, Medieval and Early Modern Jewish History and Culture, Modern Jewish History and Culture, and Edited Volumes. Published biannually, AJS Review is a peer-reviewed journal publishing scholarly articles and book reviews covering the field of Jewish Studies. The Association for Jewish Studies is a learned society and professional organization whose mission is to advance research and teaching in Jewish Studies at colleges, universities, and other institutions of higher learning, and to foster greater understanding of Jewish Studies scholarship among the wider public. This issue includes articles on: Sambatyon, Sabbatical River Legend, Marriage to a Kushite, Gender Equality, Karaite Halakhah, Virgin Mary, Marian Devotion, Secular Spirituality, Hasidic Legacy, Hannah Arendt, and Adolf Eichmann. Among the authors are: Daniel Stein Kokin, David M. Goldenberg, Hana Sasson, Ephraim Shoham-Steiner, Nicham Ross, and Adam J. Sacks. The AJS sought to spread knowledge of the field through its publications. "If we are a school, where is our journal?" asked Jacob Neusner at the first colloquium, and one of the immediate priorities of the AJS after its founding was to establish a scholarly journal. AJS Review, published originally as a hardcover annual, like the Proceedings of the American Academy for Jewish Research, was launched in 1976 and until 1983 was nearly single-handedly edited by Frank Talmage. The AJS, which would place heavy emphasis on the Review in its applications to join the American Council of Learned Societies, founded the journal in order to showcase Jewish studies' sophisticated standards and unique area of study.36 In his first "From the Editor," Talmage outlined his vision for the journal, which reflected the AJS's general approach to the field's boundaries: It is hoped that this Review will reflect some of the changes that have taken place in the situation of both Jewish scholarship and Jewish existence over the last eight decades. It should be open to all fields of inquiry and should be limited only by the geographical and chronological bounds of the Jewish people itself. In 1984, Robert Chazan took over and reformatted the journal by creating an editorial board to provide more procedure for the review of submissions. Presumed First Edition, First printing thus.
