Soft cover. Condition: As New. Dust Jacket Condition: No Dust Jacket. 4th Edition. Unread. Dated 8/17/2007, inscribed, and initialed diagonally to the title page by the author. The book does not appear to be a "satirical parody," but rather a straightforward and reasonably informative (and entertaining) account of the author's 20 years as a Strip club bouncer, including for Mike Galardi's Cheetah's Club in Las Vegas, eventual center of the "G-Sting" scandal in which several Clark County (Las Vegas) county commissioners went to prison for bribery (though no attempt appears to be made to cover that legal case in detail.) The names of those commissioners seem to have been slightly altered, presumably out of legal concerns, and that may explain the addition of the "satirical parody" label, as well. The "vice" officers of the Metropolitan Police Department do not come off well -- unless of course you embrace the pragmatic view that the proper role of the police is to protect such commerce, providing everyone gets their cut. Glossy front cover illustration is a closeup of a young woman putting her finger to her lips. 305 pp. Blurb to back flap by the redoubtable Doug French says "impossible to put down." We agree. Nothing delicate about this business, or the author's descriptions of it. 305 pp. Reduced from $25. Inscribed by Author(s).

Hardcover. Condition: Very good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very good. Joshua Jordan (Front cover photograph), and Dick F (illustrator). Approx. 480 pages. Illus., discography, slight wear to DJ edges. Signed by the author, with sentiment [Best Wishes]. Melvin Cheren (1933 - December 7, 2007) was a record executive who helped start the Paradise Garage, also known as "Gay-rage", a New York City gay discothèque popular in the 1970s and '80s. His first job in the music business was in 1959 as salesman for ABC-Paramount Records. In the 1960s Cheren joined the Army and served in Germany. In 1964 he was in charge of production for ABC Records. In the 70's he accepted a position for Scepter and began campaigning with the company to start producing dance music. In 1976, Mel Cheren and Ed Kushins founded West End Records, the music label that defined the sound of New York City in the heyday of disco. Cheren created the 12-inch vinyl single, which permitted longer playing time than the standard seven-inch, and which gained its greatest popularity in discos. Cheren was business partner and former lover of Michael Brody, who created the Paradise Garage in 1977 with the financial back-up of Cheren. In the 2006 "The Godfather of Disco," a documentary about Cheren, he himself called the Garage "the ultimate expression of the whole fabric" of gay night life. In the late 1980s Cheren founded the nonprofit group "24 Hours for Life" to raise money for AIDS relief. Through the organization he published his autobiography, "My Life and the Paradise Garage: Keep On Dancin'" (2000). The story of the rise and fall of the legendary Paradise Garage, the underground disco that was rivaled only by Studio 54 in its soulful and decadent magnificence. Set against the passionate love affair of two men who would both eventually rate as two of New York City's greatest style and scene makers, the story traces the hypnotic birth of disco, the Garage inspired technical innovations that changed the music industry, the erotic life of gay New York, and the devastating rise of AIDS. What started out as a whisper of an idea between lovers--Garage owner Michael Brody and financial backer Mel Cheren--eventually culminated into a dance palace that existed for more than a decade. Tom Moulton, Francois Kevorkian, Grace Jones, Thelma Houston, Frankie Knuckles, Junior Vasquez, and others help recreate the moment when love was the message. Presumed First Edition, Presumed First Printing.
