Hard Cover. Condition: USED_VERYGOOD. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. Third printing. Original cream colored cloth with gilt decorated front cover, gilt titled spine. 443 pages with deckle fore-edge and red top-edge stain. In the definitive English translation by M. F. K. Fisher. "The most famous book ever written about food and man's taste for it, Brillat-Savarin's The Physiology of Taste, which was first published--at the author's expense--in 1825, is today considered the bible of all serious eaters. There have been many translations, but there has never been one like M. F. K. Fisher's." Mary Frances Kennedy Fisher (1908 - 1992) is considered one of America's greatest writers. Her writings revere the art of eating simply but well, of taking pleasure where it is found and of loving life with all of its challenges. This copy is INSCRIBED AND SIGNED BY M. F. K. FISHER to a close personal friend. "For Loverne Morris from Mary Frances with love always (and the tacit agreement of J. A. Brillat-Savarin) Glen Ellen, 1984 MFK Fisher." Hardcover. Condition: USED_FINE. Thiebaud, Wayne (illustrator). Limited Edition. One of 226 copies, folio size, 356 pp., signed by Thiebaud, in slipcase. Originally published in 1826 with the title "Physiologie du gout", Brillat-Savarin's brilliant work "was the product of many years' writing in the author's spare time. Published weeks before his death in 1826, the work established him alongside Grimod de La Reynière as one of the founders of the genre of the gastronomic essay" (n.b., quote from Wiki). This publication uses the translation done by M.F.K. Fisher (1908-1992), a prolific author on culinary issues; she "believed that eating well was just one of the 'arts of life' and explored this in her writing" (n.b., quote from Wiki). This edition, published by the Arion Press in 1994, made special with artwork by Wayne Thiebaud (1920-2021). Associated with the Pop Art movement, Thiebaud was known for (among other things) his urban and landscape paintings, drawing influence from artists like Richard Diebenkorn and Edward Hopper. With a career that spanned decades, Thiebaud was one of America's most prominent contemporary artists. This one of the most desirable books published by Andrew Hoyem, one of the greatest fine press printers of the second half of the 20th century. As of this writing, we see only one other copy available in the online marketplaces. ___DESCRIPTION: Bound in full light blue cloth over boards, black lettering on the front and spine, a drawing by Thiebaud across the bottom of the front board, the limitation page at the front, this copy no. 169 of 226, sign Thiebaud's signature in pencil below, with 200 drawings and nine colour lithographs by Thiebaud throughout; folio size (14" by 10 5/8"), pagination: [1-6] 7-355 [1, colophon]. In the publisher's slipcase covered with the same blue cloth as the book, with black lettering and vignette on the spine. ___CONDITION: Volume fine overall, with clean boards, straight corners without rubbing, a strong, square text block with solid hinges, the interior is clean and bright, and entirely free of prior owner markings; a few barely discernable spots on the spine, else fine. The slipcase near fine, strong and sturdy with no splits or tears to the seams, the cloth clean other than a few light, stray spots, the cloth along the edges just beginning to fray in a few spots. ___CITATION: Arion Press Bibliography, no. 44. ___POSTAGE: Please note that this is an exceptionally large and heavy book and additional postage may apply; please inquire for details. ___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB, and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell.
