Hardcover. Condition: As New. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Unclipped ($18.50) dust jacket protected by archival mylar. Dust jacket is missing small edge pieces from top and corners. The book includes two chapters on Indonesian dance. The author has written in blue pen on the front blank fly leaf: "To Davy in old friendship and deep gratitude for unstinting, great help when I needed it most. Claire July 1967." Claire Holt was an expert on Indonesia and Indonesian dance, and had worked as a researcher including an early experience as a research assistant to Margaret Mead. Laid in is a copy of a letter sent to the author thanking her for the book. The letter is on onionskin paper with the letterhead of the law firm Blanch Freedman and Gloria Agrin. This suggests that the "Davy" of the inscription is Blanch Freedman's husband David Freedman. The Freedmans and Agrin were well known as left wing immigration and criminal defense lawyers.Agrin had helped with the defense of Julius and Ethel Rosenberg, and the Freedman/Agrin law firm defended W.E.B. DuBois and also Clive Boutilier, who was deported based on his homosexuality. The deportation had been ordered by Judge Irving Kaufman, the presiding judge who sentenced the Rosenbergs to death. Inscribed by Author(s).
