Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. The Revolt of French Canada 1800-1835: A Chapter in the History of the British Commonwealth; by Helen Taft Manning, Emeritus Professor of History, Bryn Mawr College, Pennsylvania; MacMillan & Co Ltd, London, 1962. From the blurb This book deals with the struggle between the French Canadians and the English-speaking minority in what is now the Province of Quebec. Although the French Canadians had always insisted on the retention of their language and their laws it was not until the growth of a new middle class in the cities of Quebec and Montreal that they attempted to seize political power. The professional classes, unlike the seigneurs who had been courted by the English governors after the conquest of Canada in 1759, studied the English constitution carefully, discovered that under the Canada Act of 1791 they had every right to control the assembly and, through the assembly the finances of the province. The book ends with the defeat, in the election of 1834, or the moderate leaders in the assembly, who had tried to cooperate with the Whig ministers in England, and the triumph of the great nationalist leader Louis Joseph Papineau, who allied himself with the radicals in the British Parliament. This book, 426 pages is in near-fine condition in a near-fine dust jacket that is now in a protective mylar wrap.
