Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. New York: Hill and Wang / A division of Farrar, Straus, and Giroux. First Edition and First Printing. Signed, with a lengthy inscription to New York State Senator Charles Schumer, by the controversial but pragmatically effective Oneida Nation Leader and CEO of Oneida Nation Enterprises, Ray Halbritter, at the recto of the ffep opposite Halbritter's printed letter to the readers. Octavo, dust jacket designed by Aaron Artessa, buff and black boards with gilt spine imprinting, 434 pp. A very near fine book, in a very near fine unclipped jacket; faint touches of soil on jacket and on bottom page edges are all that keep this copy from Fine status. See scans. Something of a double-association copy, with Senator Schumer's prior ownership and Nation Leader Halbritter's almost moving inscription to him (see scan), which includes several thoughtful Oneida language terms. When two populous opposed sides are equally certain of their clear rightness, what is right, by definition, is in fact never clear. Though this book is not entirely objective - it is written from an apparent slight prior-judgment slant about a land-rights issue which, as much as any issue in contemporary times, is extremely difficult to judge with regard to who and what is right, and thus cries for arduous efforts at objectivity all around - it is certainly a trenchant work by two very respected scholars in Glatthaar and Martin. Highest level provenance to purchaser. l-46n. Signed.
