Die Führung hat, wie es sich gebührt, das Heimatland des Dichters übernommen; aber das über den Tag hinaus Große ist niemals nur Besitz Eines Volkes. So scheint es sich von selbst zu verstehen daß an dem Jubiläum auch Deutschland teilnimmt. In der Tat ist bei uns im Laufe der vergangenen Monate oft genug gesagt worden, wir hätten bei dieser Gelegenheit einfach zum Ausdruck zu bringen, daß wir das Fest des römischen Dichters als einen Gedenktag der abendländischen Bildung, mithin in stärkstem Maße auch als unsere eigene Sache ansehen. Einer solchen Gesinnung stimmen wir, die wir hier sind, sicherlich alle von Herzen zu. Aber es will mir scheinen, als dürften wir uns dabei nicht vorschnell beruhigen, als seien wir durch diese grundsätzliche Überzeugung noch keineswegs des Nachdenkens quitt über unsere Pflicht oder unsere Befugnis uns als Deutsche eine Vergilfeier zu eigen zu machen. Denn es verträgt sich doch wohl nicht mit der geistigen Rechtschaffenheit dessen, der sich gern Humanist nennen möchte, daß er bei festlichem Anlaß gemeinsam mit anderen etwas priese, das ihm im Alltag vielleicht fern und gleichgültig ist. Gerade die besondere Gelegenheit soll dem Besinnen auf die Grundlagen unseres geistigen Besitzes dienen. Vergil bedarf unserer Hymnen weder heute noch sonst. Wir aber werden gut daran tun uns zu fragen, was er uns denn bisher gewesen ist, was er uns in der Gegenwart bedeutet und welches Bild seiner Gestalt wir etwa von der Zukunft erhoffen. Die deutsche Auffassung Vergils muß sich aber abheben von dem Hintergrunde seiner europäischen Geltung. Die nach Vergils Tode veröffentlichte Aeneis ist sogleich bei ihrem Erscheinen in den Mittelpunkt der römischen Literatur gerückt und dort für immer verblieben. Kaum jemals mag sich eine Zeit zum Empfange eines großen Kunftwerks so bewußt gerüstet haben wie das hier der Fall war. Gleich als würde für ein erlauchtes Geschlecht der einzige Erbe mit schmerzlicher Ungeduld erwartet, so hatten sich seit langen Jahren immer dringendere Wünsche auf das erhoffte römische Nationalepos gerichtet und schon die ersten Anzeichen seines beginnenden Lebens wurden mit sorglicher Teilnahme und bald auch mit dithyrambischen Prophezeiungen begrüßt. Aber lang noch dehnte sich die Frist und nur nach einer letzten schweren Gefährdung trat das Werk schließlich ans Licht. Seiner einzigartigen Wirkung tat es keinen Schaden, daß sein Schöpfer es nicht so bis aufs letzte hatte ausgleichen und glätten können wie seine strenge Hingabe es forderte. Die Aeneis wie sie nun durch die Jahrtausende gehen sollte war kein Torso, sondern ein in sich vollendeter lebendiger Körper. Sie galt sofort als das klassische Gedicht schlechthin, richtunggebend für alles künftige epische Schaffen, eine unentrinnbare Macht auch denen, die bewußt andere Wege suchten, Stolz und Heiligtum des nationalen Lebens wie des religiösen und ethischen Denkens und Fühlens, zugleich auch, entsprechend der Geistigkeit dieser griechisch-römischen Welt, fast vom ersten Tage an Gegenstand des ausgedehntesten gelehrten Bemühens.
