Le livre de l'ancien notaire Fournier-Verneuil avait été condamné à la destruction comme contenant des peintures indécentes et des expressions obscènes, par jugement du tribunal correctionnel de la Seine en date du 19 avril 1826. Sur appel, la Cour royale, par arrêt du 13 juin 1826, a purement et simplement confirmé la sentence de première instance et ordonné la suppression de ce Mémoire, comme étant la continuation du délit.Cf. Édition originale de cette violente satire contre les vices de la société parisienne. Ce volumineux pamphlet est le plus violent de tous ceux publiés par Fournier-Verneuil. "Les invectives - et je le veux croire, souvent les calomnies - pleuvent sur tous ceux qu'il attaque" (Lacombe). L'auteur, un ancien notaire "que des malheurs avaient peut-être aigri (Lacombe), fut poursuivi et condamné pour cette publication qui tympanise pêle-mêle les jésuites, le clergé, l'aristocratie, les femmes, et bien d'autres ! Son ouvrage se divise en 7 chapitres : les Tuileries, l'Hôtel de Ville, Place des Victoires, Colonne de la Place Vendôme, le Beau Monde, Histoire du Notariat de Paris, le Clergé. Dans le courant du volume, la plupart des noms des personnalités mises en cause sont désignés par leurs initiales. Une clef permettant de les identifier - la "Clef de Paris" -, qui avait été imprimée à part sur un feuillet in-4 a été reproduite par Fernand Drujon in Les Livres à clef, 749-754. Les photocopies de ces pages sont ici jointes et permettent d'apprécier pleinement ce libelle mordant et provocateur. Bel exemplaire dans sa reliure de l'époque.
