Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book traces the formation of the North West Mounted Police and their adventures as the first force tasked with policing the vast expanse of the North West Territories in Canada. The author delves into the political and social tensions that led to the establishment of this mounted police force, including the illicit liquor trade and violence perpetrated by rogue American traders. The author provides historical context on the indigenous tribes inhabiting the Territories, their conflicts with encroaching settlers, and their interactions with the police force. The book also highlights the challenges faced by the police as they navigated unfamiliar terrain, established outposts, and enforced law and order in a region rife with conflict. The author illustrates how the actions of the police brought stability to the region. Their efforts helped preserve peace, protect indigenous rights, and pave the way for the eventual settlement and development of the North West Territories. First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Very good +. First Edition. iv, 223 p. 23 cm. 9 full-page b&w line drawings. Rebound in half burgundy leather with multi-coloured boards. New endpapers. Ink inscription and older bookstore stamp on half title. Sir Cecil Edward Denny, Indian agent, author, and archivist, was also a North West Mounted Police officer. This memoir reveals Denny's sympathy for the Native people - mainly Blackfoot and Cree - as they struggled to adjust to a changing world. Denny's views are not those of today; he believed that assimilation was necessary and supported drastic means, such as residential schools, to achieve it. But he was an advocate of gradual change, not a quick alteration of the Native world to so-called civilization. Today he is remembered as the author of this book, a valuable account of the early years of the NWMP and of his attitudes as one of its officers. Denny's view of the police as responsible for the peaceful settlement of the Canadian west is in accord with, and has actually helped shape, the traditional heroic view of the Riders of the Plains.
