First edition 2015. 275 pages. Illustrated. Paperback. Fine. Benjamin Calder-Smith travelled around the UK for 18 months meeting and interviewing a broad cross-section of former fighters and boxing personalities. He now presents the stories of huge forgotten talents, coulda-been contenders and men who established a foothold in British boxing history, highlighting the highs and lows of their careers in and out of the ring. From the agonies of injury and enforced retirement to a poignant late comeback inspired by personal tragedy; from a British Boxing Board of Control-licensed ringside doctor to a late-blossoming veteran of the ring, Ungloved features unique, varied and personal accounts of the 'noble art' from a bygone age. Memories are relayed with the same passion as was expended in the ring, describing the good, the bad and the ugly with brutal honesty and heart-warming humility. These moving accounts provide living proof that, when knocked down, the human spirit has infinite capacity to bounce back. Many boxing titles in stock, please ask for our list, or link.

Paperback. Condition: Gut. XXV, 119 p. Aus der Bibliothek von Prof. Wolfgang Haase, langjährigem Herausgeber der ANRW und des International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT) / From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - leichte Randläsuren, Fußschnitt angegraut, Bleistifteintrag auf Schmutztitel, sonst guter Zustand / slight edge wear, bottom edge grayed, pencil entry on half title, otherwise good condition. - The volume is the first edition of fifty-five letters of the English philhellene, civil servant, Chancellor of the Exchequer, Home Secretary and Secretary for War, Sir George Comewall Lewis (1806-1863) to the great Göttingen Hellenist, Karl Otfried Müller (1797-1840). They document the decisive role of German Wissenschaft in establishing serious classical scholarship in nineteenth century England. Lewis translated Müller's Dorians and convinced him to write his epochmaking History of the Literature of Ancient Greece in English. These books exerted considerable influence among English speaking peoples and resulted among much else in Oscar Wilde's Dorian Gray and Milman Parry's use of Serbocroatian parallels to Homeric oral composition. Lewis in many ways prepared the English for the influence of Eduard Fraenkel, who a century later would transform English classics from a gentleman's hobby into a profession. The letters will not only interest philologists. Intellectual historians of nineteenth century Britain will welcome them as well as students of the influence of German thought upon the English. / Table of Contents Preface Introduction Select Bibliography The Letters of George Comewall Lewis to Karl Otfried Muller Appendix Index Personarum.
