Partecipa attivamente alla vita culturale italiana e fa parte del MAC milanese. Quindi realizza delle pitture dove la sgocciolatura è largamente impiegata. Tali opere vennero presentate nell'ottobre del 1951 alla galleria Numero di Firenze e costituiscono la prima manifestazione di pittura informale realizzata in Italia e definite in seguito "pitture nucleari? Sul finire del 1951 si trasferisce a Parigi e nel maggio 1952 ha luogo la sua prima personale parigina (Galerie Arnaud). Nel 1957 aderisce al gruppo "Espaces Imaginaires" proposto da Pierre Restany. Nel 1960 parte per l'America e pur lavorando con la Gres Gallery di Chicago, risiede a New York. Ritorna a Parigi. Partecipa all'azione del"Nouveau Réalisme". Dopo un soggiorno prolungato a Tangeri, rientra a Parigi e nel 1965, firma il primo manifesto della "Mec-Art". Ha partecipato alla Biennale di Venezia nel 1950, 1958 e nel 1968 quando è invitato con una sala personale, mentre nell'edizione successiva è commissario di esposizione.
