A very good copy of the first edition in the original blue gilt-decorated cloth binding with numerous black and white illustrations by Speed and H J Ford. All page edges gilt. Part of the Fairy Book series, this was the third published. The binding is bright and clean with bright gilt decoration to the front board. The spine is slightly darker with a small pale mark near the rear spine joint about half way up. The back board is very clean with a paler area along the spine joint at the bottom and a tiny scuff on the top edge. There is light pulling to the spine and some wear and light turning to corners. The original black endpapers are present with the bookplate of Castlecraig Library to the front pastedown. The contents are complete, clean and sound. There is light fox spotting through the volume with some pages clear, some with the odd spot and some with light freckle spotting. There is a small ink mark at p22 and the bottom corners to pp 181/2 and 183/4 have been miss-cut in binding. Please enquire if you would like to see additional images.

Typical for Lang's edited collections, the work to adapt and translate these stories has primarily been accomplished by women with whom he worked, duly credited in the preface, though not the title page.
