Condition: Very Good. First edition. HB. Green cloth, gilt titles & crest to spine. viii, 607pp, quarto. With map near back. Introduction, historical record, then chapters on a wide range of non-native animals introduced to New Zealand (including invertebrates anf fishes), followed by plants, plus interaction of species, legislation, biblography. This copy has a press cutting on introduced birds loosely inserted with a letter attached from the New Zealand author of the cutting to a Mr Glegg - probably the British ornithologist William Glegg. This copy also has the bookplate of ornithologist Bryan Sage inside front cover. Very Good condition. Covers have some browning to spine but gilt bright, small marks to front, dust darkened top closed edges. Pages clean, browned endpapers. Nice copy. Pictures available.

A fascinating account of the early introductions of exotic species to New Zealand, including those of some surprising species such as squirrels and zebras whose populations did not manage to survive in the wilds of New Zealand. The work is arranged with chapters on the different orders of animals - mammalia, birds, reptiles and amphibia, fishes, mollusca, insects with myriapoda, crustacea and arachnida, pentastomidae, platyhelminthes, nemathelminthes, oligochaeta - and of plants - dicotyledons and coniferae, monocotyledons and ferns. Other chapters include: "Interaction of Endemic and Introduced Faunas"; "Alteration in Flora since European Occupation of New Zealand"; "Acclimatisation Work; General Considerations". Appendices include a short 1 page appendix on "Opossums in New Zealand".
