Condition: Gut. Front cover with a small image of the art print, 1 side text, 1 side with art print fixed to one side, back side blank. Leaflet slightly bumped at the lower edge in the fold, art print very good. Text in Japanese and English. - Hashirae - (Important Art Object) Katsukawa Shunsho (1726-1792) studied painting under Ko Sukoku and Miyagawa Shunsui before he commenced designing, around 1770, the numerous nigaoe (likenesses of actors) which are his particular contribution to ukiyoe. Shikitei Samba, a popular writer of the early 19th century, makes the first known literary reference to pillar prints, using the term "pillar concealments," in Kusazoshi Kojitsuke Nendaiki (Various Speculations about Historical Happenings). This source states that "pillar concealments were begun by Koryusai and were made fashionable by Kiyonaga." The long, narrow format of the hashirae poses a particularly difficult problem in composition. Shunsho composed this print ad-mirably, representing a courtesan in formal attire, her head bent slightly forward and her body arched, in the coquettish pose of professional women of the era. This is a masterpiece among Shun- sho's occasional designs depicting female beauty. Sprache: Englisch Gewicht in Gramm: 550 Leaflet 28,5*42 cm, Art print 16,4*67,2 cm.

Originalhalbleinenband. Condition: Gut. Einbandzeichnung: Heinrich Wienynk. VII, 143 S. Mit 5 farb., 40 schwarzen Taf. u. 10 Abb. im Text. Gutes Ex.; stw. papierbedingt leicht gebräunt. - Katsukawa Shunsh? (* 1726 ; 19.
