About this Item
Proof copy. Wrappers. Some pages slightly creased. Numerous printer's marks and corrections throughout. The author's first book, in early form (in the event it was published under the joint imprints of Collins and Harvill). Sheila Cudahy (1920-2001) was the only daughter of Edward Aloysius Cudahy Jnr, only son of the co-founder of the Codahy Packing Company (Omaha) and victim of a famous kidnapping in Omaha in 1900. In 1943 she married a fellow Columbia student, Giorgio Pellegrini, and they set up in publishing as Pellegrini and Cudahy, introducing Giovanni Guareschi to the English-speaking world in 1950 with The Little World of Don Camillo. After Pellegrini's sudden death in 1952, their firm was sold to another a year its junior, Farrar, Straus, which duly became Farrar, Straus and Cudahy, with Sheila Cudahy an active partner, specializing in Catholic authors ("I never met any other American Catholic woman quite like her," recalled Tom Burns in his memoirs). As well as writing further volumes of stories and poems (The Bristle Cone Pine, & other poems, 1976, again published by Collins/Harvill, was printed by the Rampant Lions Press), Cudahy also translated Natalia Ginzburg.
