About this Item
Mild insect damage to spine, rear board and endpapers. Second impression in the year of publication, from the Jebb/Belloc family library, with, loosely inserted, an autograph letter signed from Christopher Stone ("C"), 2pp. 8vo, The Tithe Barn, Denchworth Manor, [c1946], to "Sweet Chuck" (a stepgrandchild?), a gossipy letter recording a visit with his sister Faith to Lord Berners at Farringdon - "ever heard of him - very queer bird but good company", "the loveliest 18th century house I've ever seen with a tunnel walk where a ghost walks with his head off as told in one of the Ingoldsby Legends - which you certainly haven't ever read. A dear old lady novelist called Mrs Belloc Lowndes was there too - sister of Hilaire Belloc - placid as Queen Victoria but full of friendly malice about everyone who was mentioned. She tears a character to ribbons as if it were a lace handkerchief". Stone, uncle of Reynolds Stone and co-founder of The Gramophone, shared the Tithe Barn at Denchworth with his brother-in-law Compton Mackenzie. Lucy Jebb (née Pollen, died 2014), Maurice Baring's great-niece, married the architect Philip Jebb (1927-1995), Hilaire Belloc's grandson and Marie Belloc Lowndes' great-nephew, who was brought up at Belloc's house in Sussex, King's Land; both Jebbs were active collectors of Belloc material.
